We're going to be a bigger footballing concern than Barcelona at this rate. At least 1,798 of those new residents will soon be dyed-in-the-wool Albion fans and we'll have to expand the Amex futher. We should call the new town 'District 9'

Is it part of the south downs park? Really? It's hemmed in by Whitehawk, woodingdean, ovingdean and rottingdean. It seems a better place than the actual countryside to build new homes for Brighton, what with it being surrounded by Brighton suburbs.
I was confident there'd be reasons why it wouldn't be any good for development, didn't think it'd be that one though!
I think TLO was talking about the Mayfields plan.

This country's population is growing, there's no houses, jobs etc etc to go round. Yes ok, we can stop the immigration etc etc but to say a chunk of the Sussex countryside will be bulldozed is quite hypocritical. Only around 7% of this country has been built on...we need more houses.

I'm not against a new town but that's not the right place for it. The roads and railways can't cope now.

GNLF was talking about houses between Whitehawk, Woodingdean and Rottingdean. That land is in the South Downs National Park.
The Mayfields plan isn't.

Check the park boundaries and you'll find the reason why Mayfields is where it is. It ISN'T within the South Downs National Park.

All those complaining about this are probably also complaining about the price of property in Brighton. One way to help affordability is a big increase in the supply of houses.
However, the Mayfields site as shown is nowhere near Burgess Hill station. The nearest station is at Hassocks but it's not close enough to walk to. This is a major consideration for sustainability. I'm not against a new town but it needs to be in the right place.

Wouldn't care if they built nice looking houses aimed at a demographic that are actually likely to be looking for jobs (ie. within walking distance of a station) and want to get a foot on the housing ladder, but this kind of looks like profiteering to build a new retirement village.

I agree, and they will create much needed jobs. But if such a proposal goes ahead these properties should be
a) Affordable
b) Aimed at first time buyers and prioritised.
I still maintain that argument is a little hollow all the time there are 10's of thousands of empty properties lying dormant.

agreed...surely any "new town" in sussex is potentially ideal for commuters. This site looks like being in the right neck of the woods (access to brighton, gatwick/crawley and london wise) but looks too far from a train station to make it particularly attractive to commuters. Not sure there is a site available that is on the london-brighton line, but i'm not convinced by this site at all.
