Right here, right now
Southampton have appointed ex-Holland international Jan Poortvliet as a replacement for manager Nigel Pearson.

Poortvliet played at the 1978 World Cup and has won six titles as a manager in the Dutch lower divisions.

The 52-year-old will be aided by fellow countryman Mark Wotte, who will take charge of the club's academy.

The cash-strapped south-coast outfit stressed that the situation has been forced on them by the financial trouble at the club.

The salary of the new duo will also be less than that of Pearson but "with big bonuses in an incentivised structure".

Pearson kept Southampton in the Championship after beating Sheffield United on the final day of last season.

Southampton chairman Michael Wilde told the club's website: "Since taking control of the club it has been a major priority to resolve the manager and coaching situation and to that end we had to look at the financial restrictions in which we're operating.

"Having established those, we held a meeting with Nigel which was extremely constructive and helpful and helpful.

"The board were impressed with what Nigel had to say and we are sure he will be a well respected manager in the future at whatever club he ultimately goes to.

"We are extremely grateful for Nigel's contribution. He came to the club in a time ofr crisis and through his hard work and commitment we were narrowly able to avoid relegation and we wish him well."

And Wilde added: "Bearing in mind the financial restrictions, the board have decided to implement a coaching structure which will optimise the potential of youngsters within the club."

I knew Southampton had huge money problems - but if they can't afford 'big-name manager' Nigel Pearson, they really are f***ed.

He's already promised 'total football' apparently. He clearly hasn't seen much of the Championship...

I'd be a bit worried if I were a Southampton fan, hearing that.

Pearson was on over £300K per year plus bonus. These two guys must be on less than £150K between them. I think Southamptonmay be in big financial trouble if things do not go well at the start of the season.

A comforting fact for the manager. No welcome and ringing endorsement. Only a statement proclaiming that the new management are a cheap option.

One wonders if this is a ploy to attract buyers. Potentially a decent sized team that could flirt with the Premiership if they are able to sort themselves out. Rather worrying that a team that can sell over £50m worth of talent over the last few years is still losing money hand over fist. But what can you expect if you are paying young players like Dyer and Wright-Phillips £8k or more a week.

Difficult to see just how they can be losing so much. Is it all down to the wage bill or is some of it from borrowing for their relatively new stadium. Perhaps their break even figure at St Marys is close to capacity as their crowds weren't too dire last season. Our break even figure for falmer is about 14000 each game I think which seems decent financial planning to me!

Has an impressive record in the Dutch lower leagues, and he really can't be any worse than Pearson - who was TERRIBLE. Good move for the Saints in my opinion

Dont think that Pearson was terrible. He did keep them up in the end which was looking like a tough ask right up until the final whistle of the season. Pearson did not get the Saints into the mess they were in and imo did a good job to keep them up.

Will surely be a candidate to get one of the first Championship jobs available next season when the sack race begins.

Dodd actually got them in the mess. but everyone forgets, they were around 14th when burely left, hardly setting the world on fire.

and pearson did manage there demise INTO the drop zone before scraping them out of it on the last week.

His record was dire, and frankly, without stern john, we would be eyeing up a trip to st marys next season.

The Dutch can be pretty astute. Don't write them off too early. Doubt they'll push for promotion but reckon they'll do better than last season.
