Shirts look so much better with plain stripes on the back, without the box for the name and number.

Yes but there is no colour that renders the number identifiable on a blue and white striped background. We have tried red yellow and black. None worked. I would imagine that mauve, green and orange would fare equally badly. The panel is sadly unavoidable. That said, with only 5 stripes on the back then maybe a mahoosive number in black might be visible....mock-up anyone?

All numbers on shirts in Premier League games are a standard design and size, unfortunately.
