Hi all,

I've recently bought a new ipod classic. I used to have an 1st generation ipod nano which i stopped using about 3 years ago. I'm about to reload itunes onto a new laptop and start using it again. My question is can i transfer the music from the nano onto my new itunes setup up easily so to start with i have a few tune good to go before loading more onto it (and the new classic).

I've been told of something called Iexpolorer that will help do this - is this the ticket? or is there an even easier way?

All help much appreciated.

I may go to an Apple PC later this year, as I like the layout and quality. I think it may be easier to sign up to The Cloud on the i-player and transfer that way. Anyway enjoy the new i-pod.

You can link your new iPod to your iTunes/Apple account as you can have a number of devices with which to share you music and apps. For example, our household has 2 iPhones, 3 iPods and they can all sync with the same iTunes library. You would therefore sync your Nano with iTunes first and ensure everything on that is in your iTunes library, then connect your classic. This might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

When you first connect the classic iPod, it should ask you to sign in to the account you want it associated with i.e. your current iTunes account. Once thats done you should be able to sync your music as before to both devices.

iTunes Match is also well worth considering, especially if you have any poor quality mp3's which you can set Match up to replace with high quality ones from their library.

Depends if you have purchased music associated with the old account with iTunes, or whether all your music is from elsewhere such as ripped CD's etc. If you've not purchased any music through iTunes then it is likely you will be able to create a new account, and still transfer the music off the iPod as described to the new machine.

If you have purchased music, you're going to have to go through the process of trying to reset your existing account.https://iforgot.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/DSiForgot.woa/wa/iforgot

I've downloaded itunes onto the new machine and have managed to log in (oe whatever) but i cannot see anything that i recognise from the old layout, any of the tunes on my old account or anything. Sorry but i hate stuff like this and can never seem to make it work. I'm about to throw the laptop out of the window!

Logging into the old account in your newly installed iTunes on your new machine won't download the music. What it will do is allow you to play previously purchased iTunes music from that account when you transfer it to the library from your existing iPod nano.

What you need to do now is connect the iPod Nano to the new computer and see if it will sync. If it doesn't automatically, you need to follow the instructions for transferring that I posted before.

As far as I know you can't transfer music off an ipod into iTunes.

iTunes is horrific, fully expect to lose everything. iTunes is the most counter-intuitive system out there, I have never got my head round what syncing really means.

You're best bet is to find one of those slightly dodgy programmes that will rip music from an ipod onto your computer, then transfer it into iTunes, then load it onto your new ipod.

good thing you have the 1st gen ipod nano, they removed the ability to do this after that incarnation

found this video on youtube, which gives you the instructions

the files will have odd file names, like FXYD etc, but when you drop them into itunes it recovers all of the song information

i had to do this years ago when my PC died, so it might not work but it should...

You only need these 3rd party hacks and software if you're transferring from one iPod to a different computer with a different iTunes account to your own.

This is not necessary when the OP owns the iPod's in question, and is happy to use his existing iTunes account (Apple ID).

The reason you can't transfer music off the iPod to any computer should be obvious. In order to make the deals in order to get every major record label to sell their music on iTunes, Apple had to convince them it could do so without that music being pirated i.e. you going off to your mates and them copying your iPod onto their computer - this is an illegal distribution of music, whether you ripped it from a CD you own, or purchased from iTunes.

If you return your old Nano to Apple they will give you a brand spanking new one, as long as you old Nano is one of the black and white ones. Apparently there was a fault with them. Check the Apple website for details.
