I see the majority aren't considering things such as reading and understanding of the game, the ability to get the best of the players around you and the ability to be an inspiration to both players and fans alike. It seems the criteria is if you bang in the odd 30 yarder. Thank god Nsc isn't picking the new England captain.

We are talking about a player that carried Liverpool to the Champions League.

His performances for England have been sketcky, but I am guessing that is partly due to him and Lampard not working together.

At present Terry is a first choice player, but if Woodgate comes back his place could be under an element of threat.

Scholes?

The same Scholes who bottled it two years ago because he wasn't good enough? The same Scholes who is BLIND, SHORT and GINGER? ???

-----------Robinson---------
Neville--Terry(c)--Ferdinand--Cole
Lennon--Gerrard--Hargreaves--Downing/Etherington/Barry
----------Ashton--Bent/Defoe----

For the upcoming matches....

I think he will move Gerrard to the right and keep Lampard in the middle. Also for the Greece game it looks like Parker might be back in.

The same Scholes who has returned to action following eyesight problems, who retired two years ago because of a clash with Sven due to his insistance on playing him on the left. (since Scholes left, we've achieved sweet f*** all apart from a win against the argies), the same Scholes who is world class, who MaClaren can get the best out of as he's worked with him at Man U, the same Scholes who can play up front, and the same Scholes who is SHORT and GINGER:)

Realistically, it won't happen. But after Lampards dismal world cup, and Gerrards long period or relatively poor form in comparision to domestic performances, then yes, i would DEFINITELY put Paul Scholes in the England midfield.

You've got to have Hargreaves inb there - one for the next few years and possibl;y one of the few to come away from the World cup with his international reputation enhanced.

Need to see Becks, Owen, Gerrard head for the international scrap heap and Lampard on a strict warning.

Possibly. I'd like to see Parker in the squad, and maybe Gerrard on the right although in the longer term if we have Cole on the left it makes us very narrow, but I think Lennon and Hargreaves did enough in the World Cup to deserve their shirts to start with.

Lennon to me is an impact player at present. Brilliant to bring on for 25 minutes, but am not sure he would have the same effect as a starter.

Bearing in mind Beckham is likely to be injured for the first few games, I think McLaren will stick Gerrard out there as it gets round having to make a decision with regards to Gerrard and Lampard in the short term.

Scholes is past his best. The reason he was stuck out on the left was because he was forced out by better players in the centre.
If Mclaren is to be a force of change he should not go back to the past lby bringing in someone like Scholes. We have an abundance of talented midfielders, especially attacking ones. Lampard had a poor World Cup but he's been one of England's most consistent players for the last few years, superb in Portgual and top scorer in qualifying for Germany. And there is Gerrard, Hargreaves, Carrick, Parker, Reo-Coker and even the likes of Barton and Nolan. Calling up Scholes would be a big step backwards.

I wouldn't select one!

Pick your team and then select your captain. Once the final whistle goes there isn't an England captain until the next match starts.

Giving one individual player additional clout within the England set-up just doesn't make any sense to me. Unlike a cricket captain he doesn't have a say on selection, or where people play during the game, it's far less significant. But Beckhgam turned it into something it wasn't. It meant whenever Beckham was playing poorly we had the whole "but how could Sven drop his CAPTAIN?"

Bollox to that, if Rio and Woodgate are playing well, I don't want SM to have any added pressure about dropping Terry, and likewise Gerrard in midfield if Lampard is playing fantastic, and he wants to play him with Hargreaves.

I don't remember all this fuss when Bryan Robson got injured, about "Who becomes the England captain?" the team was picked and someone out of that team - Butcher or maybe Shilton - was made captain for that game.

Gary Neville, without a doubt...No one shows more passion for England than that man out of the current crop and he appreciates the supporters who travel as he always applauds us. Even in Baku when he went off injured he hobbled over to us all at the end of a dour game where we were freezing and wet to clap us...Top man

Gary Neville for captain.

Albion & England forever.
