Don't get the 1944 reference? Surely they must have done some basic research into the forming of the Home Guard?

It's set in the years after the original

I actually saw a very rough edit of this film in Crawley Cineworld. Signed up for a focus group at a previous visit, not knowing what the film would be. It's a pretty good effort all in all.

Reggie Perrin had a great cast 2nd time around but, although not terrible, it was terrible compared with the original.

In what way?

I just assumed it was a piss take of the relative level of threat by that date for those that would clock it and for those that didn't it still works because they couldn't repel any threat anyway. Or not. I dunno.

A film of a group of people trying (not terribly well IMO) to pretend to be other people who were pretending to be people from the 1940s
What I've seen of it isn't very good - I would have preferred them to have not tried to emulate the originals but to have done a totally new film

Sgt Wilson is the greatest sitcom character there has ever been in my view.

I think a lot of thought on the castings will make this very good to watch.
