Also a comprehensive tram system which means you can get pretty much anywhere without having to use a car. Regardless of the latest kerfuffle over individual cycling lanes, it is time to get serious about reducing car use in not only this but all cities. Ever increasing car use is simply not sustainable.

Totally agree. I'm not against the cycle lanes. I'd love the town to be as car-free as possible. What I am against is poorly planned policy-making. The council put out a Tweet yesterday effectively saying that to put in a lane, then remove it in a matter of weeks isn't wasteful because it was central government money.

That really doesn't matter. It's still taxpayers' money that could be spent better elsewhere. It's a weak excuse and dangerous to the council's own existence:

- Shambolic central government that determines policy by positive headlines rather than rational decision-making chucks money about.
- councils gobble up the money and make knee-jerk decisions.
- councils backtrack and remove the infrastructure they've rushed into place.
- taxpayers think 'what a waste of money'
- government politicians now find it easy to shift the blame - and have more 'proof' that public bodies can't be trusted to spend wisely. Now, long term, it's even easier for them to dish out essential infrastructure projects and services to the private sector so their mates can make a profit.

Hey presto. We've all been turned over again.

Agree with all that.

Brighton / Hove actually
Having car parking bays where passengers, young, old, disabled and families exit the vehicle into road traffic one side and cycle lane traffic on the other is complete and utter madness.

So much for this sleeping woke generation :lolol:

Have you seen Worthing? I don't vote for The Green Party, but this is not just their doing!

I drove into Worthing for the first time in months yesterday, what the hell have they done, it is absolutely ridiculous, virtually the whole town centre reduced to single lanes, utter madness. Emergency vehicles can't get through and all this is not far from Worthing Hospital, stupid doesn't even come close to the clowns who decided this was a good idea.

The whole town centre is, and always has been, single lane or pedestrian.
Except for the one section from the Broadwater bottleneck to the Morrisons bottleneck.

As with Brighton, I don't agree with location, love the decisiveness of the decision, but let's not pretend prior to that cycle lane Worthing wasn't anything other than a giant noisy carpark.

Thank god for cars.

Without them this Sussex Police Officer and the NHS would have had next to nothing to do last night:-

what a waste of money that would have been.

Video: Brighton driver deliberately clatters wands on emergency bike lane

https://road.cc/content/news/video-brighton-driver-clatters-wands-emergency-bike-lane-276907

Footage has been posted to social media of a Brighton driver deliberately clattering a row of wands forming an emergency cycle lane along the city’s seafront – resulting in him breaking his vehicle’s wing mirror.

The video, which appears to have been filmed by the driver, was posted to Facebook on 23 August by Julie Dawes.

She wrote: “Someone very close to me is a very bad boy … we really don’t need another cycling lane or Green Party to be voted in again.”

Makes me so proud.

It was sooner rather than later.

The Worthing ones are so despised, it is only a matter of time that the same thing happens here.

But non-violent direct action is acceptable these days is it not?

As funny as it is, I saw it happen on more than one occasion as cars tried to get out of the way of emergency vehicles. Many drivers just ran over them hoping for little or no damage. Best one was the Fire Engine which did just mow them down.
Incidently, traffic this past bank holiday weekend was packed. Not sure if there was an incident Hove Lawns way (mods weekend?) but two lanes stacked up all the way back to the pier. Had the cycle lane still been in place then the queue would have gone back five miles I reckon.

Had a leisurely ride along seafront today. Great to see so many using the cycle lane

I cut down through Worething on my way home yesterday . . . . single lane for cars from Broadwater to Waitrose . . . . . ok, fair wnough, but the seond lane needs to be split, half for Tour heros and half for motorised 2 wheelers . . . . If anythings going to get people out of cars other than odd sunny days for shorter journeys or local shop trips it will be scooters, elcrtric bikes etc. . . . in addition, motorbikes are all stuck with the cars because of the cones. its an ill considered half arsed bodge up of a job.

The Worthing ones will be gone quite soon.
