If you're going to get him to do anything, dont do plumbing as it's a ****ing pain in the arse most days!

:lolol:
Every time I come home after having a bad day I tell my youngest son, “ whatever you do don’t take up plumbing “

He did come and help me during the summer as I had a job changing 20 rads and some other bits in an empty house, he was really useful.
He’s started college now doing A levels.

I'm sure I can't be the only person who reads this with some bewilderment and envy. Do people really earn £500 a day as a "tradesman" these days?

£500 would be an appropriate daily rate for someone earning an annual salary of £85,000. This amount is in the top 3% of UK salaries with solicitors and chartered accountants median salary being only around £42,000 .....???

I think most people know that electricians and plumbers do pretty well but these numbers are astonishing. I am honestly considering advising my 13 year old son to investigate a career in this sort of line. With a modicum of business savvy - having people work for you - and personal charm it seems pretty straightforward to achieve a comfortable lifestyle and early retirement...!!!

How hard is it to acquire the necessary skills/qualifications of a tradesman?

I use reliable tradespeople, always good work, they solve all issues and they’ve never let me down:

General builder for extensions, brickwork, hard landscaping etc - £200 a day.
Carpenter - £220 a day.
Heating engineer etc - £200 a day.

Obviously a VAT registered trader will always charge 20% more.

I wonder if the £500 a day merchants are extremely busy, so chance their arm with a super profits rate, not bothered either way if the work materialises.

Wrong Direction went to college for at least three years to gain a City & Guilds certificate. As he says he doesn't earn anything like some of the sums quoted. For every day he is working there will be a day of running around. Don't forget he has to pay for Public Liability insurance - a grand. Van insurance and road tax - another grand. Employing an accountant £500. Van maintenance /mot and so it goes on. So just to say - it's a bloody hard job.

Most of the sparks I worked with only owned a brush and would leave little piles of plaster/dust/cable in the corner of the room 🙄
To be fair I normally work in high end houses around West London and normally leave the place spotless. I’ve even been known to get Henry out the van now and again :)

At one job I opened up my drill box and it was full of cable ends, the sparks was long gone :)

Talking of tools I’ve been investing it the T-stack what a great bit of kit pricy but what a god send no more endless trips to get drills etc love it, The trolley is expensive but saves your back big time.

Just got a new (to me) van for ULEZ and getting it bespoke racked out - Got all my end feed 28/22/15 in Stanley deep organisers, but 15/22 speedie and comp, and 32/40 waste/compression currently in gorilla buckets/euro crates and this is the time to get sorted, so looking at Trend or Milwaukee Packout cases..

And for the doubters, there's an outright Self employed cost right there - Van 15k, alarm/locks (and stereo..) 2k, racking 2k, all plus the vat..

ULEZ what does this mean?

I’ve got several Stanley deep organisers, I bought them when Screwfix had them on offer. I have got a few of the old style F & E tanks with waste fittings in.

ULEZ - Ultra Low Emissions Zone - will cover all of London inside North and South Circular from Oct 2021. All vans and cars must eco compliant - Diesel newer than 2016, petrol newer than 2007, or pay £12.50 a day, every day, 365 days a year. Coming to city near you to shortly..
