I've flown below the radar on this one and have only just read in to it now. What a load of tosh.
I take it this scheme was created for the likes of Bleat Hut who couldn't get West Ham tickets despite being the life and soul of the club because they happen to buy season tickets (which, I must remind you, come with the excellent incentive of getting you in to every home game all season).
Why should this scheme cost 30 quid? Surely it is just a case of getting all those people who think they might like to go to away games next season to register? What is this money for, exactly? Do you actually receive anything tangible for it? Say our allocations were cut to 1,000 for every game (not totally unlikely given the trouble we seem to run in to with other clubs for standing) does the 30 quid then become totally useless because all the tickets will be snapped up by season ticket holders in their one per holder quota?
There was a time of day where if you wanted to go to a football match, you repeat dialled the club until you got a blister on your finger and finally got through. If you didn't get a ticket then you listened to the game on the radio or watched it on TV if you were lucky. I have no problem with season ticket holders having first dibs on the tickets - they put their money in to the club each summer, fund the club during the summer transfer window (Arf, arf!) and generally deserve some extra reward over and above watching the mighty stripes at Withdean once a fortnight but the whinging of STHs seems to have totally stitched up other fans and to a large extent the club too. I've got loads of mates who have a passing interest in the Albion and the best way to try to indoctrinate them is to get them to an away day, have a laugh and then get them down to Withdean (god forbid takin the casual fan to Withdean!).
We need to remember that we are not a particularly well-supported club, especially give that out of about 500,000 possible people who could come and watch us each week, we attract something like 5,000 so we need these floating fans and need to cash in on them when the going is good.
I don't particularly fancy paying the charge myself and it will be doubly hard to get a lot of my friends who like coming away that they should cough up too.
It's very democratic, the club listening to the fans and then acting but at the same time, a small group of people seem to be protecting their own castles here and it could backfire spectacularly.
