The point of the exchange though would be that you only get money back if the ticket is sold and of course the train strikes would apply to anyone who is looking to buy your ticket!!!

No it wouldn't. Others are perfectly able to go by coach or car. Or perhaps someone who lives near or in the "away" town and suddenly finds they are free.

It's a terrific idea, train strike or no, giving a second chance to non-super fans who can't all be logging into the ticket system at 8.59 to fill baskets up for their mates.

I've been to about 15 away games this season (league and cup). Yet to be asked for my iD as part of the routine checks - aside from Palace where its mandatory for everyone.
I saw the table/set up at Brentford and just missed out....

And i've been asked once to pick up tickets from the ticket office - for Old Trafford - where it was queue free but in a office round the other side of the stadium to the away end.

I have a 100% premier league record. I have been to 1 away game in the Prem (vs Saints, Boxing day 2022) and had to go the ticket office to pick it up. (more anecdote than data, but working from home means a minimal interaction with other humans, this is close enough to interaction that it counts for me)

I haven't been checked but know of plenty of cases where people have, and there are multiple known cases of ID checks failing resulting in match bans.

From the best of my knowledge, if you are selected for ticket collection, the collection point is very close to the away entrance and as convenient as possible.

PS: There was a pick up - for 2 of my group - for Brentford. It took pretty much 30 seconds and was in a special bespoke Albion booth/set up right next to the away end.

One pick up last season, no ID checks apart from Palace where they usually do it anyway

At the moment I’m not faulting the system, before the ID checks me and the boy struggled to get tickets, then we started to get tickets, now we get more tickets. This seasons yield has included the lower allocations of Brentford, Palace and Athens. As T2 Luton and Bournemouth is still unreachable but we’ve no complaints. We stick to the rules (which is really unusual for me) and now get to 80/90% of the matches we want to/can get to.

Had to collect an Arsenal ticket from the ticket office when we beat them 3-0. Easy pick up process, just a shame we initially walked right past the office and ended up doing an entire lap of the Emirates.

Been ID'd three times, Palace plus two randoms. Oh, and another four times in Rome of course

I don't think anything is untouchable in tier 2, although it requires a bit of luck and/or patience.

I've got tickets to everything I wanted his season, including all of Luton, Brentford and Bournemouth - it's a matter of just trying to be as quick as possible, use the "Best Available Seat" tactic where applicable and, if you miss out initially:

1) Refreshing like a lunatic for up to an hour as tickets drop out of other baskets
2) Keeping a keen eye on here for when the returns/unallocated club comps are listed for sale nearer the game

But, your main point is correct: the punishment for handing on tickets is just not worth it to regular-attending fans, so people don't risk it, meaning more availability for others.

For the random selection last season for pick up, my group of 8 I buy tickets for, all got picked one at a time, games in a row, culminating in me getting picked at Bournemouth, and then, never again.

Average about 8 away games a season since COVID - have not yet been checked other than Rome.
I like the system though as it’s fair

Moaned a bit about the ballache when the email came, but it was straightforward. Plenty of notice, instructions were simple, including the pick-up highlighted on the map, kiosk was on the direct route between pub and away end, less than a minute wait as 1 person in front of me.

I've got no problem with the system, it's no real inconvenience and helps keep it fairer for those that go most often. I've been at games before these checks were brought in, where points harvesting was really obvious by the number of people who actually turned up.

I've never been selected for random ID check on the day. That would be worse as I don't have a driving license and don't want to carry my passport every time 'just in case'. I'd have to hope they'd see the name on my credit card, the photo of my passport on my phone, and apply a bit of common sense.

I'd hope in that case if you had at least some reasonable way of showing it's you, the worst would be missing that game, not an actual ban - as you obviously haven't passed the ticket on, just not risked having your passport nicked/lost. Be interested to hear if anyone's ever been in that situation, what was the outcome?

I did point out to them, that I was who was saying I was the whole time, did make me laugh that the person checking my ID when I walked up, said 'how are you Jack?' before I'd showed them any ID.
