Welbeck looked a different player at the end of last season and hopefully his frequent injury issues are now behind him.

POV: You’re every manager Danny Welbeck has ever had

30m - 1yr left on his contract- take 20m at a push but he’s replaceable deffo

Wasn’t aware of contract when posted but even so we’d be replacing him with an unproven player. Massive gamble.

If there's no new contract possibility then we do need to cash in now-ish. Undav replaces him and that means we have pretty much what we had last season in attacking option terms plus Mitoma and Ensisco. I can see him going and I don't think there'll be another attacker coming in.

Welbeck looked a different player at the end of last season and hopefully his frequent injury issues are now behind him. We actually started scoring goals at home for fun towards the end of last season with Welbz starting and we'd have better back up now even if Maupay left.

I don't particularly WANT him to go, I'm a big fan (unlike the guy I go with who gets totally frustrated with his misses) but it probably makes sense if he does.

Sometimes a club signs a player who is almost instantly destined for better things, you realise that in a sad way we are holding that player back and he deserves to be with a bigger club ... not sure if I get that feeling with Maupay.

But he is in his final year and if he's not going to sign a new contract then it makes sense to listen to the offer.

The club may not be listening to this current offer as they’ve clearly leaked it to Naylor with the specific intent on creating a bidding war. I suspect they are keen on getting a few more million.

He is not extending his contract. He’s gone.

The king of shitehousery is dead, long live the new striker signing!

Possibly, but he had surgery for his persistent hamstring problems in October 2021 that was potentially shit or bust. Since coming back from that layoff he's looked a totally different player and not been out again.

I accept that we could sell Maups and he could get a career ending injury a day later but so could pretty much anyone else. It's part of the risk that you calculate when you buy and sell.

Maupay is about at his level with us. If you've ever played against someone who's even been high up the non-league pyramid or had a couple of pro trials you'll appreciate how astonishing that level is.

But, no, he's not the next Cucurella or White in our transfer out terms, and no one anywhere is claiming that he is.

Neal Maupay...What Does He Actually Do?

Forest have spent £10m on one player for the season.

Effectively, we’d be ‘spending’ £15m plus about £3m in salary on Neal as he’d leave on a free in August.

I’ll take the saving of £18m rather than the ‘massive gamble’ thanks because it’s not a massive gamble at all, even if we have to bring Andone in to support Welbeck, Undav, Ferguson and Mitoma (which we won’t because the club won’t sell unless we are bringing in another striker, plenty of quality ones on a free or in their final year at the moment).

Oh my. We never seem to sign them if they do exist.
It’ll be hard to replace him. My suspicion is we won’t try to.

Undav is a like-for-like replacement.

We’ll be back where we were (9th) last season if we don’t get another in although you could argue that Mitoma has strengthened our attacking options.

Undav has done in Belgium what Maupay did in the Championship at a similar level. He is capable of equaling Maupay’s 8 EPL goal haul from last season.

In the words of Churchill :"Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it". Welbeck is not the answer. If you were a betting person, the over/under for the number of games he will play this coming year has to be about 20.

This.

We HAVE replaced Maupay. He even looks similar and seems a bit grumpy.

So you think Welbeck will play less games than he has in his either of previous two seasons with us. Despite the fact that the club are confident the surgery he had last season has fixed his long standing injury issue and he was involved in 21 of the remaining 22 games when he came back from surgery last season (and was a non playing sub in the other game). Obviously it’s not without risk, but everything points to Welbeck being fitter than he has been for years.

At present that’s an untested theory. I like to believe it’s true. I like to believe that the club only try to recruit upgrades on what we already have, but even with all Tony’s data, there’s risk. An early injury to Welbeck, our new arrivals not hitting the ground running, and we could start to feel the loss pretty quickly.

Every team’s at risk of unexpected injuries, but effectively our only other known quantities in attack are Welbeck and Trossard. I want to think they’ll both have great seasons, but we’re putting a lot of pressure on our new arrivals if they don’t, when our manager seems to like to blood players slowly.
