Well said Jeremy Hunt, and he is not alone on the Tory Party saying such things. I saw a quote from a former MP and Foreign Office Minister (whose name escapes me) yesterday saying there should be an enquiry about why it took 6 years.

Thunder Bolt is right. Some people just don’t like strong women. She hadn’t said anything that didn’t need saying, and has done it with dignity and courage.

I think it was the bit where you failed to mention that Boris Johnson, in his role as the British foreign secretary made untrue and incredibly foolish comments that made her situation worse. Unforgivable incompetence.

On Saturday, three days after Johnson’s statement to a parliamentary committee, Zaghari-Ratcliffe was summoned before an unscheduled court hearing, where the foreign secretary’s comments were cited as proof that she was engaged in “propaganda against the regime”.

She would have been perfectly entitled to have a go at the oaf Johnson for landing her in the shite with Iran with his ill-informed suggestion when he was Foreign Secretary that she was training journalists. As for her appearance before the cameras, I can see why her old man was so keen to get her back. Dignified, articulate and intelligent - and the photos that were used while she was incarcerated didn't do her justice.

I may be wrong as I have not watched the press conference again but I got the impression that she did not know what the Oaf had said.

that would be Iran. they put on trail and convicted on several occassion for different charges. should have been released a couple of times, but they found another reason to imprison.

officially, from both sides, the matter of the £400m is not related to her (or others) imprisonment. its great its been coincidently sorted out.

Mrs DiS commented this morning that she is always described as British-Iranian, not just British. I guess that might partly be because she has, I believe, dual nationality, but it does make you wonder.

I am married to a strong woman and have two strong daughters aged 40 and 38 who are both doing well in their careers. Although I worked for the Churches for 25 years before I retired 2 years ago, I also had the privilege of working with a number of strong women in senior positions in both Local Government and the Voluntary Sector - enormously capable, professional and well organised.

I guess I’m a feminist.

Presumably you regard Iran as 100% responsible for arranging her release, then. If, instead, it had something to do with the UK, then the length of her incarceration also has something to do with the UK. You can't have it both ways.

With this kind of situation we have three options: (i) let her rot (ii) do all we can to get her out and (iii) piss about, seeing how best to spin it for short term political gain. Johnson and pals spent far too long on options (i) and (iii) before doing the necessary.

Fair enough. You are always clear minded, even if I often disagree with you

I suppose that if you are biased against Johnson (as I am) then his role (and he certainly had one) in protracting the woman's imprisonment will take on a greater significance than it may for people who consider that Johnson is by and large (if not entirely) doing a great job under difficult circumstances.

(I feel a bit unclean after typing that last bit. I need to wash my hands, now....)

Our government needs oil with the Russian/Ukraine war going on, so decided to pay the £400M debt which has been outstanding for over 40 years (some of the delay was down to sanctions against Iran)
Three Iranian delegates came to London in 2013 and were detained here. The government refused to pay then. Three, possibly more, people were seized when they went to Iran to visit family or on business, and held on spurious charges.
Now we need oil, the government has paid the debt and Iran has released two people back to Britain. It was not a ransom.

Yes I am shouting because you've already been told. It was a refund to Iran for money they had paid us in 1979. An International court told Britain to pay it when the sanctions on Iran were removed in 1979. The money had been kept in the bank and needed to be returned but Britain stalled.
