[Albion] Naylor and Owen

Time to admit that Andy Naylor and Brian Owen got more things right than wrong in the window. OK, neither saw Mwepu coming from very far out, but neither did anyone in the national media. They both consistently denied the Edouard rumours, but said Cucurella would probably happen.

Meanwhile all the clickbait websites, and some well-known writers , fell for the Bissouma to Arsenal/Tottenham/ Man United/Man City/Liverpool rumours. And when some Twitter sites were saying Ben White was done and dusted at £40m, they both held their fire. Naylor in particular always said that Nunez would be almost impossible to get done.

Both refused to build up false hopes just to get a few clicks, which IMHO deserves a bit of credit.

They generally do get things right, but people like someone to blame so shoot the messenger when Naylor and/or Owen report that an exciting transfer is a load of click-bait bollocks.

They certainly don't get much wrong but, similarly, they very rarely break a story. They hear a rumour, call the club and then either shoot the rumour down or confirm interest...

The club will always state they will not comment on transfer speculation, and they don't - at least not directly.

However, they do have an interest in managing fan expectations when it comes to transfer activity, and Messrs Naylor and Owen are very useful to them in that regard. They, in return, get keen eyes on their twitter accounts which, I'm sure, helps to keep their respective employers happy.

Everyone's a winner.

Yep.

I don't rate Naylor as a writer, find his Athletic pieces totally dull and a waste of web space. I also don't like his constant digs at the fans over the years and then the change of tone when he needs subscribers to the Athletic.

But I will trust what he reports, he's very rarely wrong considering the sheer volume of rumours he has to confirm or deny.

I'd also rarely be wrong if "maybe" or "its complicated" was my catchphrase and I only said yes to questions like "do bears shit in the wood" and no to questions like "do you think Jar Jar Binks will feature in the next Bond movie?".

Did a good job reading up on what other journalists revealed though, I'll give that.

Basically all Naylor did there was deny anything was going to happen on every front. He then changed his mind on Cucurella when it became obvious he was signing. I'm not giving credit for that, literally anyone on here could do that.

Are you expecting them to break a story or, more specifically, a transfer target story? How do you expect them to go about that? Which sources should they consult in order to achieve this?

Now Palace have signed Edouard, if there is any truth that we WERE interested / made a bid it will surely come out over the coming weeks.

There's nothing they'd like more than to ram it down our throats that they signed a bloke we were after. Edouard would be a hero if he told the Palace faithful he turned down Brighton to sign for the Eagles.

Fair play, it’s pretty impressive that in your two years of following the club because you like the manager that you’ve managed to become enough of an expert to know more about it than dozens of fans who have been here for decades

Typical JCL is Swansman.
Has no idea of what we went through to get here as he didn't know we existed then I suspect but is quite happy to spout shit about fans who have followed this team through thick and thin

I think the matter is that neither Naylor or Owen are given any inside transfer info by the club and that is because understandably the club wants to do its deals on the quiet as there are other PL clubs with bigger budgets who could try to hijack a deal .

Any transfer news is usually broken by a national journalist or specialist international football journalist on Twitter , there are 2 or 3 that spring to mind that have far more followers than Naylor .

Naylor can get a yes or no if he goes to the club with a specific name of a player and that’s usually because the story has already broken in the media somewhere .

I'm not sure why anyone has to 'admit' to anything. I've always thought that they do a good job, fact check and report back what the club is saying. They are two guys doing their job instead of getting sucked into a pissing contest with the likes of dodgytransferrumours.net.

I guess it's because of people who say things like:

*shock* club mouthpiece prints what club wants them to print

Seriously? You really believe they tow the club line? Instead of, say, I don't know, doing things properly and reporting the facts and what the club is REALLY saying as opposed to a load of gossip, heresay and rumours?

Let's look at this the other way. Andy Naylor presents all of the BS rumours that were flying about as credible. Then they don't come off and he looks like a numpty. What's the point?

People who don't understand how those two – and many others in their profession – go about their job, clearly don't understand the role of a journalist/reporter.

By not writing anything interesting, they get to be right after the event. I guess that’s something. Has either written an interesting and insightful piece with the inside track on what’s prevented us addressing the obvious problem in our squad, and where we clearly tried and failed to recruit (Hernandez, Nunez)? Or an in depth piece on our transfer strategy overall? Or just the same arrogant and boring ‘see I was right to say nothing and you fans are idiots’ comments? (in Naylor’s case, to be fair to Owen he isn’t so condescending).

They just get told what they get told. Agree though the shite like the Edouard fee and all instalments it had from daily record / express / mail is shockingly bad. The club are just very good at keepi go things quiet our end.
