Not a chance Phillips comes here if we don’t rate Duffy. Lazy journalism. Pick a team in the bottom half who are known for defending.

Not that lazy it's 'pick a team who is DEFINITELY losing a defender, because they will DEFINITELY need another one'.

Oh.

He’s not bad and would be around £15m. He needs to play as he proved when he came into the first team for the last few games of the season. He’s a real battler, a leader, and is aerially dangerous, not a White but could definitely be a Dunk in a few years.

The mainstream haven’t picked up how we operate yet. To be fair a small minority of our fans haven’t either.

There won’t be “a Ben White replacement”, or a Biss one, being bought immediately as they exit the club.

We’re several steps ahead with our succession planning and their replacement will already be here, in our u23’s or on loan. Eg. Ben Whites replacement in the squad will most likely be an Ostigard, Clarke, Van Ecke or Dedoncker.

If we sell White, then I can see this as a goer. About 25% of the transfer fee we’d get for White. Yes, we have Veltman but he also needs to cover the RWB position WHEN Lamptey gets injured.plus Phillips is a young prospect and so his value will probably increase over time.

Edited for you :)

Pick a name, pick a team.

IMHO they should at least have the decency to do it like the FA Cup draw.

"Number 6"

"Ball 6 that's Olivier Giroud, currently of Chelsea and previously linked with Brighton, PSG and Southampton. This summer he'll be linked to..."

"Number 12"

"Number 12 that's Leeds United, so Giroud to Leeds United on the back page of tomorrow's Mail. Now for the Sun..."

That's the ideal plan and when you loan out a player like White who has an outstanding season with Leeds (and previously in L1 and L2) and want to replace or have a different player to a regular (eg: Duffy) then things work perfectly.
But are Clarke, Ostigard etc ready to play in the EPL ?
We bought Veltman last summer and Webster and Lamptey the season before to strengthen the defence - yet still loaned out dozens of players.
Caicedo looks a great prospect but is he ready at 19 to play a full season in the team. ?

I have a lot of friends who are aware there is a football team called Liverpool and they never talk about him.

There isn't a perfect way of managing succession though. It isn't just about transfers, but also injury and form. Our defence was so resilient last season, given all the changes and set backs.

Then it is up to the player, whether they seize the opportunity. The obvious stand out last season was Sanchez, who I have long felt was a great prospect.

If you had asked me at the start of the season I would have expected far more from Molumby, who seemed to be waiting for permission to start playing and Connolly, who just went off the rails. The best U23 performance I saw was Sanders against I think Man Utd or Liverpool, where he just ran the game, before disappearing off to Lincoln, so it isn't always easy to judge.

Ostigard has experience of playing on front of 30k crowds in Germany and a good season in the Championship. I wouldn't be disappointed if he is added to the premier league squad this season (he might be though, seems more than a little inpatient!). Caicedo whilst young is a full international. He looked lost in his first U23 game, but improved rapidly over the next couple of games. I think we could see a lot more from him, especially if he performs well in the cup games.

NP? No I don't think so.

Ostigard looks very promising, purely from what I’ve read and seen from Cov fans I’d be happy to see him step up. Clarke has been their player of the season if I recall? And Van Ecke and Dedoncker are both highly rated.

Obviously this is where GP and his coaching staff come in. They’ll make the call as to who we’d promote next.

Moises I think will play. Given we played Connolly, Alzate, Sanchez and Lamptey we clearly have no issues playing a young player if we believe in them.

Yes. All really promising players but not seeing the transition to the first team as smoothly as Ben White - i'm guessing some of those will never play for us. But yep the succession planning, loan model, strong academy, selling young players to the top 6 etc is alongside bringing in players / and spending to do so. These might be taking a punt (on wages) on a Veltman, Lallana or a Welbeck at tail end of career where there is risk in age, injury or adapting to EPL or buying a Moder, Lamptey, Webster at beginning of career, perhaps already an international but certainly not a proven EPL player - but it will still cost millions. But sometimes there's a gap in development - Caicedo might need a year out on loan, Lamptey gets injured, Connolly has a challenging season. In that case - The model still involves some intervention / spending millions on players - some of whom will be more advanced than others and designed to be very close to the first team from the off.

Normally i agree with most of your posts but unless they are given a chance how will we know if Clarke and Ostigard are EPL ready?

Even if White goes we have Veltman,Dunk and Webster in a back 3 with Burn as cover.Where will Philips fit in? Clarke and Ostigard can get starts in the cup games and hopefully kick on.

Caicedo is an international and was brought half -thee-way round the world.Pointless not blooding him

The emergence of White and Sanchez, rather than regarding it as a fluke year, it is more a case of the long term plans for the development squad, the Academy and the succession policy coming to fruition. It was always going to take a long time.
It will never always produce a like for like replacement for every star player we sell on, but more often than not it is likely to provide an adequate, and occasionally more than adequate, successor. At the moment the 'next in line' cabinet looks pretty well stocked.

Not that the club would want to keep them 'hanging around just in case' but Ostigard and/or van Hecke are both 21 so wouldn't take up a squad number if good enough, or close to be good enough, to be elevated into the first team squad.

Van Hecke counts as U21 as he was born after the Jan 1st 2000 cut off date.

Østigård is 5 weeks over age.
