This plan B nonsense, what is Pep’s or Artetta’s plan B? Exactly, they don’t have one they play the same way week in week out. Klopp was the same never changed.

What would be your plan B? Go from free flowing pressing football to Dyche ball when we face a big boy and hope to cling on for a draw?
As some old coach said in a football lecture I saw on Youtube this summer.

"The strategy is plan A, the tactics are plan B", meaning a "plan B" is not really a departure from the core strategy, its just the way you adjust it according to the circumstances.

Imo the real test is always done to "can you turn a bad run of form around and come out stronger on the other side?"

The latest non-sacked manager could and the last sacked one couldn't.

If we win all these games you mentioned and then go on a 30-game-long bottom 4-run, the manager will be gone, very similar to last season.

If we lose all these games and then play like a top 10-club for the rest of the season, the manager will be very safe.

Time will tell but I'm optimistic regardless of how these games go.
Very much agree with the opening paragraph. It's the same in other areas of work as well.

Agree. When results etc are going well the job is easier, it just happens. The real test is how you respond to setbacks, learn lessons and turn it around.
In football nothing ever stands still, if you are doing well other good coaches will study what you do and how to counter it. If you are are a great coach you have to be able to adapt to stay ahead of the pack.

Are we certain that football played in the second tier of German football can be adapted to be successful in the PL?

Is the jump as big as Championship to PL or even bigger?

Just a question not suggesting anything, just that it seems we are investing an enormous amount to find out :shrug:
We really should have gone all out on Mourhino or possibly Moyes just for that PL experience.
If you don’t know TB’s style by now then I guess you never will.

I don’t go in for blind faith, even TB is capable of getting things wrong. If you don’t think he is then more fool you.

I am not questioning if this is a dodgy appointment just a little surprised that we have gone all in financially on a rookie manager in the PL.

Question everything is a sensible attitude…imo

If the Manager was buying the players then I could understand your point a bit more.

And we were spending the money regardless of who the manager was.

As has been said many times, he's been coaching for nearly 10 years. He finished playing professionally at 23 and started on the coaching trail very young.
This. His first full managerial role (albeit with a small club) was in 2016, same year as Nagelsman and Arne Slot's first manager roles. Some years before Xabi Alonso, Farioli, Motta, Hoeness, Xavi, Amorim, Kompany, Martin, Maresco ... Arteta! He's young and stepping up but he's no rookie.

Value has many variables though. If the fee is 15 million that is his value to us at this particular time. Based on the desire to sell and the clubs interested.

If De Zerbi was still in charge I'd bet his value to us would be significantly higher. As it happens we're now playing a different style of football and have brought in Weiffer to do some of the things Billy was doing for us last year.

For me, if someone can't see that he's not worth at least 25 million based on his ability, age and contract then they don't know what they're looking at. Just as well those things don't determine the sale value alone.

Not much need for the little pop at the many/majority (there was a poll) that think the fee is low.

A total of 2 assists last season (one of those against Stoke in the Cup), with 0 goals. Plus he played every game in Europe. Neat and tidy though he is on the ball, for a forward-MF, thats ultimately not very productive.

I liked him, but he won't be overly missed.

Exactly this. We will only take on coaches who predominantly play a game that involves ball possession, pressing and attack because we're trying to develop (and sell) players lower down the age group, as well as first teamers, who are comfortable on the ball and pressing. Tony's broad 'one club style' has been well documented since Poyet.

Within that, though, there will always be anomalies and adaptions. No one quite plays like an RDZ team so the lower age groups would have had to take elements of that game within their own tactics. Both Potter and RDZ (according to NSC both had no plan B) used different formations in their later matches to their earlier (Potter more successfully, RDZ less successfully). And both varied shape in and out of possession.

It was great to see Hurzeler NOT change things up on Saturday. For 15 minutes it looked like the long balls and constant pressure on Hinshelwood from Harrison was going to swamp and overwhelm us, but as the game went on we broke them up more, won more second ball and exposed just how open they were at times. Really encouraging first PL game.

We are NEVER going to play hoofball. Ever.

Are they twice as good ? Clearly not IMO.

Difference being that they are all being sold to clubs based in England.

I would also argue that two of those players are better than Gilmour with more output.
