Saw them at the O2 last year. Probably the best I've ever seen from them.
I couldn't disagree more. REM's first five Albums were masterpieces and in my view they started going downhill from Automatic for the People onwards. Although I have everything they have ever released I think I have played their final album twice.

First saw them in Jenkinsons in 79, thought they were tremendous. Ten years later at Wembley thought they were poor but they've got a lot better since. Seem far more relaxed these days.
Someone else who's improved because of this is Blancmange. Thought they were shit when I saw them early 80s but it's now a great gig.
PS Personal favourite of mine and producing some of his best stuff since Replicas ... Gary Numan.

Each to their own. Didn't get what they were on about until Automatic. Classic stuff from then onwards.
Talk Talk. Started as a pretty boy synth band and metamorphised via The Colour of Spring into true greatness with the The Spirit of Eden, an album so difficult to recreate they never played it live. Spirit of Eden is in my top five albums of the 80's.
I saw Simple Minds at Jenkinsons in 79, I didn't really like them and I'm sure someone threw beer at the band.
I saw Gary Numan a few times late 70s early 80s and he was brilliant.

This. I love One Hot Minute too. RHCP were only promoted in the UK properly with the release of Californication, but they were massive in America for at least a decade and a half before then and released most of their best stuff during that period. I saw them at the O2 a few years ago and they played Sir Psycho, best song in their set that night!
I honestly cannot think of a single band in the entire history of popular music, LESS suited to being included in this thread. Seriously.
They were a brilliant, brilliant band, who went on to become too 'pop' and too middle of the road. The day Michael Stipe woke up and thought, "Hey! I know what we need. We need to get Kate Pearson in, to duet on a real happy song. It'll be great" was the beginning of the end.
This. Every word. I carried on buying stuff, well after I'd given up on them doing anything good, purely out of loyalty to the brilliant band I'd loved previously.
Mind you, much as I hate Shiny Happy People, I don't hate it NEARLY as much as this bloke. Crikey. Actually, I'm not sure I hate ANYTHING as much as he hates this song!

I wouldn't say so. Once Waters left they were pretty bad. A Momentary Lapse of Reason was a dreadful album. Division bell was to pop like for me. People will say WYWH and DSOTM were there glory days which was probably true but i personally love the Wall and the much underrated Final Cut album.
