Nope - he was in the Hastings youth ranks at the time when he was 'poached'. Albion paid token compensation and the rest is history. John Gregory said if Dick Knight saw Barry run bollock naked past him on The Palace Pier he wouldn't recognise him. Villa paid up though etc.
The tribunal was over two players: Barry and his best friend and future agent Michael Standing. Gregory' s comment that Dick wouldn't recognise the lad if he walked Brighton beach with a seagull on their head was pretty stupid as Standing was Dick Knight's great-nephew.

Spending £15m on a striker who spent more time DJing than being playing for us

Even more pertinently v Notts County at Wembley play-off 1991 (as after losing to Boro, we did have a second chance in the play-offs). And crazy when you put the dates together, and how quickly we fell.
It was certainly a rapid descent from ‘91 to the 96-97 season. However, at the time winning the play offs meant promotion to Division 1, with nothing like the financial rewards of the modern-day Premier League, which is a minimum of 95m for coming last as well as about 70m in parachutes. Therefore, for me, the Middlesbrough game was, and still is, the biggest Championship regular-season fixture ever played.

A genuine Swedish bloke living in Sweden starting to support the club because of his love of all things Potter? That hasn’t happened yet I’m certain….
It's happened at Chelsea as well though...
