Mythbusting - Goldstone style

After we fell out of the top division the Goldstone was a grim depressing place most of the time as was the football and the club was run into the ground, possibly because of the money spent in the push for the top. Pretty pointless as there is no definitve way to prove or disprove it but those five years you talk about have only recently been challenged on the field, I loved the atmosphere and in my head it was as loud if not louder than the Amex most match days back then. Having good memories doesn't automatically make them "rose tinted"
Yeah all true, the 5 years where those you were talking about.

I have similar memories, although less so of div 1 footy, but that's not to say we didn't have fun from the mid to late 80's onwards.

The rosetintedness comes from those being the only memories.
Not exactly unsurprising, as you say, who wants to remember something that was once great in terminal decline.

But to have those great times used to sneer at present day Albion, is madness.
Just because my pie is cold.
My bus didn't turn up.
I didn't read the small print on my ticket upgrade.
I had to wait 10 mins.
and on, and on, and on.

Can't argue with your last bit about moans. My ONLY gripe with the Amex is how fecking long it takes to get away after a defeat when I just want to go home and sulk

I think the comments about parking near the Goldstone depend on your age. As a kid in the glory years of the late 70's we would be in the ground by 1.30 to get our spot, next to a crush barrier so I could stand on my crate without being pushed off. We would park on Neville Avenue but even that early we could sometimes be half way up the road.

In the gory years I could usually still get parked up near the greyhound stadium after 2pm.

I also remember asking for a bovril in the old north stand and being given something so weak I assumed it was tea so put in milk and sugar. It was only when I got near the bottom of the cup that I got a hint of beef taste and realised it was bovril after all

I think a lot of the moaning is due to how simple football was in those days. As someone said, you could have a lunch time beer and decide to go to a game. It was cheap and easy then. I don't hark back to the decrepit Goldstone but I do miss the simplicity of it.

That is SO spot on.

After I stopped going, when the game I was playing was called off, we would decide to go and watch The Albion.

No need for advance tickets, just turn up and pay.

The only thing separating you and the away fans in the corner in the East Stand NorthEnd was a school type wire fence and one or two mangy looking cops !!!

I wouldn't be surprised if technology gets us back to those times, in the near future.

Buy your ticket on your phone, and then wave the access code to a scanner at the gate.

Try explaining that possibility at half time of the Shrewsbury game 21.12.86. (we won 3-0)

I only have the Goldstone, Withdean and Gillingham to judge. So what if the Goldstone smelt of urine, it was the greatest place to be on a Saturday afternoon. Still a visit to the Amex could change all that.

I remember the uproar when the club raised the admission by a whole FIFTY PERCENT when we were promoted to the old First Division in 1979.

Entrance to The North Stand went up from £1.00 to £1.50!

Barber ou.....I mean Bamber out!!

At the time I believe our prices were the highest in the top flight, as I recall that was based on the fact we had so few seats compared to other clubs. I thought it went from £1.20 to £1.80 though, however I am getting on a bit now and I have slept since then!

Much as i loved it, the Goldstone did get really depressing in the last two or three seasons. The cabbage patch on the east stand, owners that had nothing but contempt for us, the supporters, and football that was, in the main so bad it was embarrassing. But, i still used to turn up, week in,week out, and even used to enjoy it sometimes

Lot of money to some at that time.

Payment was sometimes optional.

IF not optional you could, in your early 20's with a beard get in for the price of a child (child's admission price not exchanging a child for a ticket) with four cans of stella rammed into your coat pockets.
