Beware of all snakes, venomous or not. I have a friend who has a villa near Denia in Spain and the was an old boy that used to have a small holding backing on to the villa complex. Last time I was out there, there was no sign of him and the small holding was overgrown. When I returned home I asked my friend what had happened to him and apparently he had been bitten by a non venomous snake, but blood poisoning from the bite killed him.

I seem to remember that the rat in the kitchen that UB40 referred to was more alluding to a person (wife or girlfriend I presume) who was bad mouthing the vocalist around town and suchlike. Furthermore, said vocalists method for dealing with this "rat" was "i'm gonna fix that rat, that's what i'm gonna do" without getting in to any further specifics.

Suffice to say, real rat or not, I for one am not going to take any concrete lessons from Ali Campbell and his mob on how to deal with a rat in my kitchen. Or the dining room. Or for that matter a snake in the front room.

I feel I should make it clear that the rat in my dining room that I clobbered with a shovel was NOT my wife, but was indeed a little furry thing with a long tail - or actually quite a big furry thing with a long tail.

She is back home now, feeling very washed out and tired. If the swelling gets worse we have to go back in...seemly they do an operation to open the would up and wash the infection out....eeeek.

The bit about working at a school is she is one of those weirdos who have no fear of reptiles of insects...she picks up bloody great spiders etc... And so when people bring them in to show and tell at school she is normally asked to handle the creatures.

Thanks for your good wishes I have passed them on..but she is fast asleep now whilst I am watching the cricket.

Glad to hear that she is on the mend. That is very unusual to have an Adder in the house.

Saw 2 snakes in the garden yesterday - they are supposed to be inactive at this time of year. It is unseasonably warm, the blossom trees are out and the grass is shooting again - all at least 2 months early. All rather odd.

A month ago a friend of mine, who is the curator at a well known local zoo, showed me a abscess on her arm and said that it had been caused by a spider bite. When I made the assumption that it was one from the zoo, she said no she was bitten whilst clearing her garden shed. It was a spider native to the UK, you have been warned! I have seen the type of spider responsible, it's fangs are designed to puncture wildlife, so our skin is no protection!

I quite understand and wasn't alluding that you may be referring to your wife. In fact your description suggests it might be my girlfriend. Was the rat crying?
