The cartoons were not paticularily funny, or informative.

In fact i am just reading the book about Auschwitz which followed the BBC series and I could draw the correlation between the cartoons depicting The Prophet and those of fagin type( Juden) characters standing over german children put out by the Nazi Party in the 1930's

'Already done that mate, in an earlier post up the way. It struck me too, that there is an aligning sinister repetitiveness, and willing among leaders/scribes/many public, to vilify the general Arabic person because it's so easy to be ignorant of peoples as individuals.
The nazi social tactic worked to taint the Jews with many Germans, but I hope people learn from past lessons.

Personally, I would have liked to see GWBush 'crusade' on his own, on a horse with sword in hand.

I am not really sure what, firstly The danish media, and then the media from the rest of Europe hoped to gain by all of this.

We know that the more extreme members of Islamic Terrorist organisations are capable and have been shown to prepare to kill themselves on crowded busses, trains, buildings, planes and even fly jet airliners packed with passengers into skyscrapers in the name of Islam.

The cartoons were not paticularily funny, or informative.

You should get to the Imperial War Museum then, for the Holocaust display. You can see how the media was used to demonise the Jews (and others), and how other countries and races simply closed their eyes and let the minorities take the flak.

What concerns me is the potential for subliminal work. Having spent some time at a unit which employs cartoonists for military purposes, it's frightening to see how easy it is to use images and not words to persuade people to a point of view. The Nazis started by using caricatured Jews (long nose, big chin, hump back) as objects of derision, then turned them into child eaters and blood worshippers. Tales and fables were reinvented using old Jewish crones as the bad people, bearded Jewish giants as kidnappers and murderers, sowing seeds in the minds of children. If the Danes had carried this out with no protest, would they have seen that as a green light to carry on? Just make all the villains in cartoons were turbans, or make them dark with beards...

I don't like the way that certain sections of the Muslim world express their displeasure, but they have a right to complain about this sort of thing.

I think the point is that their religion forbids any images of the prophet Mohammed. They have every right to protest things that are important to them, just as we have a right to protest about LDC etc. Might I suggest that it it Tesco that needs to chill?

True they beleive images become icons and lead to idol worship and that religous images are blasphamey. they also expect Kafr to submit to islamic law, Sharia.

All those whining about them though probably laugh at the anti semetic cartoons in the national arab press.

People need to grow the f*** up, all this sensitivty shit has become a vicous circle with everyone crying that they are offended to the point now most people no longer care who they offend as the person complaining usually has there own political agenda.

Lies are lies. This cartoonist is perpetuating a BIG LIE that the Muslim religion and Mohammed are inextricably linked to terrorism.

Lies?

All civilised people must reject these defamations and demand the sacking of all the editors who made these appalling decisions to publish them.
Civilised?

Silence does not equal tolerance, it reflects fear and repression and is a move away from Civilised.

All civilised people should pas there opinions on them and thats is that.

Sacking editors? You really are a nasty fascist aint cha?

it is their culture to ban any depictions of the prophet. it is NOT ours. we have a culture of freedom of speech at (almost) any cost. the danish newspaper was OBVIOUSLY not saying that the prophet was a bommer or that all muslims are - this is rediculous. it is just a tasteless satire.

Kurt Westergard is in the shit. The guy who made a film with anti Islamic scenes was murdered by an Islam in his own country, Sweden I think.

It was mentioned on Newsnight last night that there is a lot of anti semitic cartoons in the arab press and i think the arabs are very fond of holocaust denial. So it is a bit hypocritical for them to get hot under the collar about these cartoons.

Also I have a lot of Hindu and Sikh friends who have no time for moslems and say that westerners just don't realise how dangerous they are.

I am not saying I agree with their position but it is very worrying for the future. One my friends belongs to some fanatical sikh organisation that actualy has sympathy for the BNP and has demonstrated against islam along side them.

Anyway I am off to Denmark for my holidays in the summer:)

Booked befroe the recent trouble:lolol:

A very good point TiD - and most satire is tasteless but founded in truth.

Unfortunately, our culture seems to be moving in that direction. Israel is always the bad guy and the palestinians innocent victims - just read the BBC. There is a great deal that we do not understand about Islam, but a side step to sharia law by trying to ban free speach is not going to help.

I think you will find that Uncle is quoting from the Spielberg revisionist film of the actual incident. Which bears no resemblance to what actually happened, obviously, but has some nice special effects in it.

In fairness, if the Arabs print anti-semitic cartoons they dont have a leg to stand on.

But I still think the cartoons were out of order.

Depicting the 'Prophet' in any way is one of the worse things for a Muslim; I think it along the lines of stamping on or burning a crucifix if you are a catholic. Every religion seems to have one thing that sets them off.

Muslims are just as sensitive about how their other prophets are treated, for instance one such prophet by the name of ‘Jesus’ was depicted in a poor light in a film called ‘The last temptation of Christ’. They took such a poor view of this and how little reaction it attracted in the Christian world that they picketed cinemas and in a couple of cases stormed the cinemas.

The problem is that we in the west are about as spiritual as a bucket of frogs and have problems understanding why people would get wound up about this, in the same way the east can’t understand why would print this stuff.

My view is that cartoonist in general tend to be the most intelligent satirist that there is, however the art is to make a statement that makes people think and question the subject matter, not offend them to such a degree that they’ll try and storm an Embassy. On the whole a very poor piece of satire …..

I think you'll find that whilst the arabic cartoons are anti semetic it's aimed at the 'occupation' of Palastine by the Jews rather than at the Jewish religion. For instance there are some 10,000 Jews living in Iran !!!
