The word genius being liberally sprinkled around. Ridiculously so.

Everyone taking the conversation as a chance to name a musician they like.
This big time. You almost purposefully need to look beyond your favourites and throw in key issues such as did they bring something unique to the musical table that had not been seen before. Has their music stood the test of time and how many records have they sold.

On that basis I will go for the following :

The Beatles
Jimi Hendrix
Elvis
Led Map

And of those the only one I personally like is Hendrix

Worthing
When it comes to music, I do think that the ‘biggest’ acts in the World have a totally unique sound. Maybe unique is the wrong word, what I mean is that if you hear a song by Queen, for instance, that you have never heard before, you immediately know it’s Queen.
They just don’t sound like anyone else, U2, are the same,as is The Stones, The Beatles, Springsteen, Bowie, The Beach Boys Dylan, etc.

This post is not an endorsement of all of the above acts, I’m not saying they’re the best, just the biggest.

I can wax lyrically in justification of all these (innovation, longevity, sincerity etc) but it boils down to personal taste though, innit?
I think we all knew this would be the longest and probably most complete list! I’d just like to add Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe fame) and Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash) as my own personal geniuses

Bit harsh there. Chas Hodges was an accomplished musician who played with many great bands in the 60's and 70's, And they wrote the Sideboard song after a visit to The Red Lion, Ashington.
And the Quo are.... Well, just THE QUO.

Just cannot see the genius IMO

Can't disagree with the above but where is Brian Eno?

It seems to me, that many of the names listed, while good would not fall into the category of genius.

For me to be considered as a musical genius the artist would need to tick all (or virtually all) of

Writes all (or almost all) of their recorded output
Multi instrumentalist, or considered one of the top 3 performers of one instrument
Length of output
Comfortable in many genres of music, and output sound changes across time
Sought out by other artists to add to record, or for production duties
At the forefront of a new style

The one big omission in the names listed so far, is for producers.
Yes HWT (correctly included) Phil Spector and George Martin, I'm really surprised that Joe Meek has not been included given he was a pioneer and most of the time working in a flat above a shop.
Also given their influence over the 70s and 80s should Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman also should be included.

And in terms of artists (yet to be listed) I would put forward Nick Lowe (performer, writer, producer) and Andy Partridge (an influence on many)
