SSN doing a spotlight on penalties talking to Matt Le Tiss have just said that 1 in every 2 penalties taken in the Prem have been missed or saved. Brentford keeper saved 3 in the penalty shoot out with Charlton tonight. not ther Prem I know

I still think it is down to keepers moving forward to early and not being spotted by the ref or his asst. What are the asst there for if not to watch for infringements or is that the refs job and they are watching for encroachment, which they still miss most times.

We can now move on to a sensible discussion after the Ollie Reynolds farce.

I am not sure that the ball makes the difference as I have said I believe it is down to inefficiency by the officials and not doing their job properly. How early did Gomez move on Sunday not only move but go forward to narrow the angle, as most keepers do.

I think the keeper is now allowed to move on his line, but not off it, isn't he? Couldn't the linesman stand in line with the goal and check whether the keeper comes forward before the kick is taken? I suppose another thing that would be blocked by the old farts that run FIFA.

Of course he's allowed to move ON his line.

And this is the whole debate; assistant referee's ARE placed on the goal line to monitor such infringements, and the goalkeeper moves off his line pretty much on every single penalty. They just don't get pulled up on it, and that's where the problem lies.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Most penalties, nowadays, probably show the keeper moving off his line before the ball is struck. Referees are going to want to avoid retakes and it is a difficult rule to adhere to. There are some keepers that stand behind their line to give themselves a little more projection.

It reminds me a bit of a false start in sprinting. Someone can pre-empt the gun and run a split second after the bang, but it is still a 'false start'.

Is this watching the keeper not one of their duties irrespective of how many times a penalty has to be taken. If its a rule stick to it, if you can't implement the rule change it, simple.

Quite, probably why Brighton players are in L1 and not the Prem.

Doesnt seem to make any difference we have scored 6 out of 12 which I think equals 1 in 2 the same. Some years ago getting a penalty was much the same as scoring a goal because very few were misssed which brings me back to goalkeepers moving forward and refs missing it and not doing their duty efficiently.

The keepers that are saving them arent Premiership keepers though are they? Some of the saved panalties have been shockingly poor aswell!

The best keepers aren't necessarily the ones who save penalties though. Peter Shilton had no great record, yet someone like Carlos Roa of Argentina did.

It's more to do with your style of keeping than your ability. And a bit of luck.
