Munich.50 years on.

An interesting one, but wouldn't it also be fair to say that many people think of the Busby babes team as one that would have been the best in the world anyway? I just find it difficult that they actually got better as a result of losing most of their first team.

Well they got to the Cup Final. three months after losing 70% of their first team.

The trouble with the Babes is that they will lways be regarded as a potentially great team.......... they will always have this golden aura about them as they will never get old, lose form, be overtaken in terms of ability or success

Out of the squad that played against Munich in 1958, just hours before the crash, the only players who survive the crash wore the numbers 1, 9 5 and 8, which make up the year the crash happened, 1958.

How weird is that!

Whats even weirder is that they played Munich on the same day as they played Belgrade!!

This may be out of line... but seeing the plaque unveiled in the Munich tunnel, i just thought it was inappropriate that the name of DAVID GILL was very prominently on display just because he helped unveil it. Top work for the name of ROGER BYRNE to be present... but Gill is just a current employee. It's like TOM HICKS being on a plaque commemorating the Hillsborough dead..
Surely not right?

Thirded, as well as AIG being prominent on the giant poster.

You can purchase a Munich '58 Replica shirt for £49.99 and a Munich '58 cashmere scarf, also for £49.99. Their marketing team are going into overdrive.

It was a tragedy that stunned the whole footballing world, not just the nation. People always ask "Why get so carried away about some Man. U. players being killed?" But they miss the point that it was also the backbone of the England team.

Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylor, these three alone were truly world class. Don't forget, they were all still young and even if they hadn't made an impact in Sweden for the 1958 World cup, there was always going to be 1962 in Chile. I was an absolute fan of Jimmy Langley who had been transferred from the Albion to Fulham, but even I can recognise that he would not have played for England if Byrne had not so tragically died.

After the disaster, with United already in the last four of tha F.A. cup, they were due to play Fulham, the F.A. allowed them to sign new players even though the then "window" was closed. Practically the whole nation willed them to beat Fulham which they did, but Bolton in the final, was a different story and they lost 2-0.

It's very difficult to explain why there was this feeling but fifty years ago, attitudes were different.

You had to be there to understand.

As an addendum to my last post, you have to realise that footballers in those days were a different breed to the overpaid prima donnas of todays premiership. They were probably paid about £15 -£20 a week, and could well have been living in the next street to you. They were people you could identify with and easily have shared a pint with in the local.

Can't say that about many who are being paid thousands a week and protected by electric fencing and a management team.

Shame Manchester United didn't show the respect they now demand from the footballing world to the families of the deceased and some of the players who, as a result of the crash, were no longer of use to them.

I remember an article in the Argus about Ray Wood about 10 years ago. He didn't have all good things to say about the club.
