I'm not naming a specific model because which one any user will want is down to their requirements - do they need a 20/40/60/whatever disk, do they need Vorbis playback, etc

As goes shortcomings, I'm not yet aware of any. And I know numerous people who have iRivers.

I use my laptop for an MP3 player. 40GB and can handle all formats *and* video :lolol:

I could use my laptop, but it is a bit bulky to fit in my jacket pocket !!!

Being a "yoof" techie, its acceptable for me to walk around with a Sony backpack with headphones trailing out of it. Not the best possibility for everyone, I admit.

Note that the headphones are not only playing music but sending me notifications of unencrypted wireless networks :lolol:

20GB is more than enough for the average to heavy user - I have 11GB after a fair few years of ripping/downloading/etc. Thats over a weeks music.

Yeah, you don't know what Gary needs but you know that no one needs an iPod. Great.

Well I own a HP-120. Shortcomings off the top of my head...

* The user interface is horrible - buttons have multiple functions; very easy to press wrong one
* You have to manually update the ID3 tagging database file - very bad
* The firmware is a little flaky
* Doesn't look as good as iPod (personal opinion)

But, of course, it has many, many good features too.

I have an iRiver iHP-140.

Love it - don't find it difficult control wise - would highly recommend - chunky but effective

I have a first generation Ipod and still love it. 5 days of music (its only 5g). The battery is wearing but this was battery technology of 4 years ago and can be replaced when i really need to.

Xclef HD-800, I've got the 500 and its amazing (although slightly bulky, the 800m is much smaller)

Worth looking around the net before diving in and buying the more well known stuff just because you know the name of it!
