Right now, the nearest place to Brighton that offers a lot of house for your money is Lancing. Shoreham is expensive, Southwick is expensive, Portslade is expensive. It’s a matter of time before younger people from Brighton realise how nice Lancing beach is and how much potential the housing market offers and start moving in, dragging up the standard as they do. Move to Fletching. During the Spring/ Summer seasons you'll be able to enjoy the Bluebell railway from near by Sheffield Park station all the way to East Grinstead where you'll change for the next train straight down to Brighton for your daily commute to work. Bliss.

They are nice areas, but it is difficult to move back down south when you want to. It took me 33 years to get back, and still have a mortgage now.

I understand what you’re saying, but if we do want to return South we’ll take what we can get. The move would see us living near to very good friends, and in the same area as her family, who she is missing greatly after living down here for 10 years. Personally I’ve lived away from Brighton many times, we live in Sompting now and the only time I go into town is when I’m on the train going to Falmer.

I moved to Lancing from Hove coming up to three years ago. Went from a pokey 2 bed flat to a nice three bed end of terrace with large driveway and garden for not much more than I sold my flat. Sure some people turn their noses up at the area but I quite like it now, my daughter's nursery was great and her primary school is excellent. The centre is a bit ropey in places but the beach area makes up for it, and popping out for something is quick and easy. My main gripe is the evening rush hour traffic, if you come from the east it can get very congested on the A27 from the Southwick tunnel.

Mrs DFP and myself are currently weighing up a move to Leeds, specifically the Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Moortown area. Really struggling to find reasons not to.

We couldn't find any! Let me know if I can help at all. We moved to Guiseley (well Yeadon actually, just) because it has much better transport links and is somewhat cheaper but just as nice an area. Chapel A is really getting pricey now.

From Guiseley it's only 11 minutes on the train into Leeds but you're also on the doorstep of the Dales, and right next to the airport (but parallel to it so not much noise).

Horsforth, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Menston and Ilkley are also worth looking at (all with stations).

Oh and Otley is great too if you're not so bothered about the train - lots and lots of pubs and a pretty place.

I’m kind of conditioned to it now, and living down here doesn’t hold the same lure and charm as it once did when I was a younger man. I’ve lived abroad, I’ve lived in the Midlands ,Cornwall and Surrey, fancy something different now.

The whole area has really captivated us, our friends live literally 2 minutes from Roundhay Park, which is beautiful, we’ve been perusing the usual property pages and there’s quite a few houses that have taken our fancy. Realistically we want a 3/4 bed semi detached with drive, nothing OTT, walking distance to restaurants, pubs and a bit of lifestyle. The Mrs is on her way up to stay with her parents as we speak, she’s got plenty of time to investigate further areas and see what takes her fancy. It’s kind of a win win, she gets to be near her family, and I’m near one of my oldest friends and God-Daughter

Sounds like you're after pretty much the same as us.

To be honest most of west and north Leeds is lovely. They generally say you should avoid south of the river though I'm sure there are some nice areas further out.

Another area we seriously considered was Farsley. There was a lovely victorian terrace which had originally been three small houses, all knocked together into a huge one, at £210,000. If it had had parking it would've been a goer.

Roundhay Park is great but:

1) Don't be tempted to look down towards Harehills. It's... not great.

me and the wife are thinking of moving from Brighton once we've had some work done on our flat and put it on the market

realistically with a child we need more space and Brighton isn't really the place where that's going to happen, so we're probably going to have to bite the bullet and move elsewhere. I work in Brighton and my wife works in Worthing so we're thinking either moving west or north of brighton.

things we need are:

-alright schools
-comfortable commuting distance to brighton and/or worthing (to Brighton needs to be done by public transport)
-decent sense of community and "stuff" to do
-ability to afford a "reasonably priced" 3 bed property

who here has experience of a similar migration? Looking at the market we can definitely afford places like Southwick, Shoreham, Lancing, Worthing and at a push Portslade/Mile Oak and going north Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill

Been in Burgess Hill for 5+ years and it's great. 10 minutes walk from the train station and 3 minute drive until a 60+ mph road. Plus the added bonus of some green spaces around. We have a 3 bed house with a reasonable garden work around £280k, much more reasonable price than Brighton

This thread is giving me whatever the mortgage equivalent of wanderlust is.

Currently in a 1 bed basement flat in Brighton. Turning 35 next year and thinking about starting a family so will need to be getting out of the basement and into a place with a garden. And a second floor. Had my sights set on Worthing as its where I'm from but Burgess Hill and Lancing could also be options. And Shoreham.

Buying in Harrogate or York might offer DFP a better chance of keeping up with Brighton prices.
