Move to non-free emails only?

Anyone else think this would be a good idea, the board is over-run with spammers and they've been becoming an increasing issue for a while now, whilst not a perfect solution have you (bozza) considered restricting registration to people with isp/work emails e.t.c. that are not free, many other forums do this and it is pretty successful.

You never know, it might keep some JCLs out too :jester:

Plenty of other options also. Restrict posts per day for new users, stop new posters creating threads for a period of time, waiting period from registration to activation or just ban people for being a complete din.

Loads of annoying spammers about lately, I accept, but who are any of us to stop new posters/ JCLs from joining or posting?

We were all new at one stage.

Would be a bad idea. Lot's of people only use free e-mails. I do, because I'm moving around a lot over the next few years, so the only way to not have to keep changing e-mail addresses is to use web based ones.

agree with you entirely Edna - it's the trolls that present the major problems - the cranky and eccentric just add to the general flavour of the board

It has nothing to do with being new, it has to do with stopping spammers by making you register with an email that is unique to you and not easily creatable. I'm sure the mods would love to hear some other suggestions too.

I doubt any of us want to stop genuine new posters from joining, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind being restricted to a handfull of posts a day until they get to a certain number. It would certainly get rid of those who set up multiple accounts to post quick fire drivel....

This was done in the past, maybe on the BB software that NSC had before this one? I specifically remember having to use my ISP email because hotmail was blocked.

True, but once again: there are plenty of existing posters who put up constant drivel too.

get them to fill out a 500 word entry on what they would bring to the forum, their favourite Albion memory, and a response provoking question. And if they can't spell, get rid of them. Or make it over 18's so we can still swear and post rude things.

or do an NSP style vetting so they have to email multiple times to get accepted.

Horrible idea. My Blueyonder account has long been defunct (thank you Virgin) so I use Hotmail. I'm not a spammer or a troll. Far more sensible suggestions than this further up this thread - time delay before you can start threads, that sort of thing.

Hmmm I'm new here & would be screwed if I couldn't use my hotmail account :wrong:

On the plus side I'm not a member of this f***ing monsters Inc thing.
It's gotta be kids or something ain't it ?

is this the 90s?

nonfree emails have been the best for over a decade

How so?

In the early days of the Internet I used to use the ISPs e-mail all the time (lineone.net in those days). However, it didn't take many ISP changes to make me realise that sticking to a yahoo one made more sense. Especially now they have damn good spam filters.

Just push the post over to childish ramblings and ban those that break the rules, no need to mess about with mail accounts etc
