I don't think she has any excuses for what she did, she's obviously a ****. However rehabilitation is surely a better answer than prison which is probably gonna exacerbate her f***ed upness. I would imagine that if she came out of rehabilitation ok then a life time of guilt and not knowing her child is punishment enough.

Part of the problem is that the average addict has a very different concept of guilt. On the other side of the coin there's Pete Dochety who will surely get banged up this time. The bloke has the wherewithal and I wouldn't doubt the support to get himself off drugs yet he doesn't have the will to do so. Okay as a music star he gets more than his fair share of offers and temptation as no doubt his dealers know he has money and will be happy to supply him.

However, he has a lot more going for him than an unmarried mother who is no doubt not caperble of work.

He too will be unlikely to stop using following a spell inside for the reason I've already mentioned.

I don't disagree with you there but I know some young, single parents and they aren't all turning to drugs and treating their kids like shit so it is possible to manage (although I do agree they need more help). I just think it is possible to understand her actions without excusing them which is something of a middle ground between what you and BoF say.

Agreed, I'm not in any way trying to excuse her at all. I just feel that there must be a better way of dealing with her and those like her. As it is those addicts who are in a similar situation (and I'm sure there are) won't change their ways in fear on prison. Its rather like the notion that the death penalty discourages murder, we all know it doesn't.

Well. Without wishing to resurrect the arguments already aired in this thread that was sadly predictable. Still, all those of you who thought prison was the right course of action must be pleased that such a useless piece of humanity is no longer a drain on the system.
