I’d rather have someone who knew what they were talking about rather than someone who is simply there because they’re a white man
As opposed to the current BBC policy of using black women ex players at every opportunity?

Not only that but he doesn't even make the most basic attempt to pronounce people's names properly. He just mangles them deliberately like it's all a big laugh.

Names are an important part of our identify and it's basic human decency to learn how to pronounce them....granted, there are always some that will be difficult for a native English speaker just like some of our names will be problematic to Spanish or German speakers, but at least make an effort.

Merson can't even be arsed to try, and just chuckles it off because you know what, it's only forrin names innit.
You mean, we didn't have a guest appearance from Scott Minto yesterday?

So falling under the “people who know what they’re talking about” category? Obviously yes.

I’d prefer no analysis at all and a bit more football, just crowd noise too instead of commentary.

That is such a ridiculous statement to make, he's there because he's an ex professional footballer, it's nothing to do with race. Do think Steve Sidwell only gets punditry work because he's ginger?

The response in question was to a statement that he should be retained to avoid having a “box ticking” replacement. We all know what that statement really means when used in this context.

All this talk about box ticking, I think we can all agree that we all just want sensible analysis from people prepared to offer some insight. I don't care who it's from (race, gender etc) but ideally it's from someone who played the game at a high level and understands what the teams are trying to achieve.

Paul Merson has his place, and that place is on some vacuous talk Sport show that doesn't demand analysis, just a tedious "everyman" opinion.

I’m now questioning my own pronunciation of Kaoru Mitoma
I seem to pronounce it differently to Guy Mowbray, who says “Kay-or-roo”
Whereas I’ve always believed to be “Kaw-ru”
Japanese words are split into syllables with equal stress on each of them. The syllables in Kaoru are Ka-o-ru, pronounced “Ka” as in “carrots” “o” as in “hot” and “Ru as “rhubarb (but truncated)”. The hard bit is linking “ka” with “o” because it’s not natural to English speakers. And putting equal stress on all three isn’t easy either.

“Carrots hot rhubarb” is still closer than Merson gets it most of the time

Only they generally don’t (IMO), Alex Scott for example was great at first, but now she’s terrible, just laughs at every opportunity. Even Sue Smith on Sky who was my favourite pundit, has gone off the boil for me (just ridiculous bias, as bad as Morrison).

However, I do agree with your broader point, about preferring someone who is coherent and knows what they’re talking about.

I agree about Alex Scott TBH, but unlike some on here I wouldn’t claim she’s a poor pundit because she’s a woman, she’s a poor pundit because she’s poor at being a pundit. Much like Micah Richards, who also seems to be there more for “the vibes” than because they actually have anything worthwhile to say.

Spot on in both cases.
It’s not about gender more ability.
