I watched that bit and it really did prove how out of touch Shearer and Hansen are with the modern game, now had that been Sky Sports you would have been treated to a very comprehensive explanation from Neville.

I thought it was a brilliant insight into their thinking and showed to me what a profound problem our footballing culture has.

Whatever you think of their punditry they were top top international class players that are genuinely expert on how to attack, defend and win football matches during their own era's, they don't seem ready to accept that it needs changing.

They reflect the general consensus of the 70's/80's English footballer, many are working within the Academy systems in England, looking after our young prospects !!

I have too often heard Academy coaches say ' I like my players to play football, BUT' always a BUT and that's the give-away.

Its a bluff, they live in a world where there is a deep mistrust of possession football, and those young footballer's trying to control and pass accurately, they were brought up with hitting 'areas' or 'channels' and it can be extremely difficult/impossible for them to change.

We have even evolved our own vocabulary to slyly rebuke a young player trying to control the ball and pass it his own tea-mate, 'fanny merchant', 'tippy tappy' 'bit lightweight' and the coaches favourite .... 'NOT THERE' whilst they applaud the big defender clumsily slicing it out for the umpteenth time.

I think this covers most of it. Hansen is Dalgleishs best mate so expect an onslaught Rodgers way if they don't immediately get the passing game straight away at Anfeld. The owners might need to stay patient this time though. They surely will, they know what Rodgers is about, don't they ?

Only exclusively British based ex player's would of negatively hi-lighted a player for keeping possession, whilst ignoring instances of poor play throughout a mediocre game.

Hansen and Shearer are big hitters, speaking to millions and worryingly sharing a view still prevalent throughout every level of British football.

Different pundits such as Hoddle and Wilkins, undervalued in England whilst in their pomp but lauded abroad would not have thought it a fair or accurate analysis of Allen's play.

The clash of footballing cultures continues.

I thought it was pretty cheap.
Allen made over 100 successful passes in the match (so I've heard) so it's pretty easy for them to pick out a few 'negative' or non-adventurous passes to make a montage of.

No, he didn't.

No, he didn't.

The sentiment of the post remains ......

Personally I think we are stuck between two stools, not quite technical enough to offer a real chance of international success and lacking the 'old style' intensity that offered at least week in week out blood and guts excitement.

Having seen Reading against Spurs on MOTD2 I think they could be in for a long, hard season and will go down. Jermain Defoe had so many chances to score far more. Their defending was terribly naive.

Having watched all 3 Premier League games live this weekend, I honestly think Norwich and Reading are in all sorts of trouble. Obviously Southampton look in trouble too at the moment but too early to judge them. Reading were truly pathetic first half, Spurs were walking the ball around them.

Worryingly for them, Federici wasn't injured but wasn't in the 18 because of his reaction to his form. That is awful, they've not played for 25 days, he can't be THAT upset with himself?! He is crucial to them. They need new defenders too.

Absolutely. It showed not only how out of touch those two bores on MOTD are but also what a shit choice of pundits the BBC has. I genuinely think Gus has educated me about football since he's been here so imagine what players can learn from guys like him. We will never go anywhere as a country all the while twats like Shearer have a platform on which to criticise revolutionaries like Rodgers.

Agreed.

Yup. I never saw the liverpool game highlights/panel but Rogers talks football very well and helped Swansea played great football. Shearer is a buffoon.

The problem with Hansen and Shearer is that they talk about how THEY played (and how they were taught etc.) as if that's the ONLY correct way to do it. I rarely hear them say "this is not how I used to play it but in the modern game the way team X play is probably the more effective/better way to do it".

Hansen's comments about general defending is often spot on but not on the rest of the game. Shearer's comments about where to get in the box and what to do when in there is often OK but, again, not the rest of the game.

Yes, there is also a lot of conveniently selective footage to help their "point" such as the great 30 yard through ball from Gerrard but they don't show the ones that are simply intercepted by the oppo and the consequence of losing possession for it.
