some people clearly don't understand flair, and as one of the creators of the *official* FLAIR concept i feel it is my duty to lay down a few ground rules

FLAIR icons, should show exceptional aptitude in atleast one of the following areas.

-Flair Hair
Flair hair can be anything from whacky colours, to outrageous styles. Afro's are generally a good ticket into the FLAIR hall of fame. Examples:- Carlos Valderama, David James, Djibril Cisse, Cobi Jones

-Anger Issues
Having a very short temper is another of this seasons 'must haves'. However, possible entrants should be careful as ONLY having a short temper will not give you entry into the FLAIR hall of fame. Examples- Ben Thatcher, Craig Bellamy, Thomas Repka

-Being Fat
Fatness is a good ticket in, as it is often accompanied with a lazy attitude to playing (see- Lazy Attitude to Playing). Fatness can also be coupled with drink problem (see- Drink Problem). Examples- Kevin McLeod, Warren Aspinall, Matt Le Tissier, Paul Gascoigne

-Lazy Attitude to Playing
Lazy players have been FLAIR icons for a very long time. Their hard working counter-parts could only dream of possessing their level of laziness. Examples- Dimitar Berbatov, Alvaro Recoba, Matt Le Tissier

-Drugs
A problem with drugs, or maybe even getting caught in possession is a brilliant way to gain entry. Special points go to anyone who has served a drugs ban. Examples- Adrian Mutu, Mark Bosnich, Roman Bednar

-Off-Field Scandal
Generally measured in 'Tabloid Column Inches', scandals off the pitch have the power to grip the nation, and are an excellent way to gain entry. Examples- Stan Collymore, Sven Goran Eriksson, George Best

-Unfulfilled Potential
This is one of the key areas where any FLAIR icon must perform. Football is rife with players who, for one reason of another, have failed to fulfill their excellent potential. Examples- Seth Johnson, Matt Jansen, Paul Gascoigne, Leon Knight

-Drink Problem
Another essential item for any potential FLAIR icon. Candidates may have been pictured drunk the night before a squad selection, for example. Examples- Paul Gascoigne, George Best, Kevin Thornton

note- All entries are subject to scrutinisation from the FLAIRMASTER

You forgot over-exhuberant goal celebrations - i.e. triple backflip with pike even if the ball flew in off your arse from 1 yard.

Flair hair:

Magico_Gonzalez_1.jpg

Anger issues:

"Despite relegation into the Spanish Second Division in 1984 and interest from French club Paris Saint Germain and Italian clubs Fiorentina and Sampdoria, González opted to stay in Cádiz. His stay was somewhat short-lived, however, as he was transferred to Spanish club Real Valladolid after the 1984/85 season thanks to problems with his manager, Benito Joanet. He did not get along at Valladolid, where his personal life was tightly controlled and after playing in just 9 games, he returned to Cádiz."

Lazy attitude to playing:

González’s contract is reputed to have contained a clause stipulating he was to be paid $700 per game played and none for the ones he missed"

Drugs:

"He is a close friend of Diego Maradona, who has said that Mágico is one of the greatest players in history: "There is only one man who can do magic with his feet and his name is El Mágico González."

Off field scandal:

"He was notorious for his love of the nightlife and his sleeping habits were also brought into question"

Unfulfilled potential:

"Some commentators have suggested that had González not been such a partier, he would have moved onto bigger clubs, perhaps even the best ones in the world." "Many critics and journalist say that if Magico Gonzales had been Argentinian or Brazilian he would have been the best in the world along side Pele and Maradona."

Drink problem:

"The wayward San Salvadorian night-loving genius Jorge Alberto 'Mágico' Gonzalez. The man who, well into the small hours, consistently led his exasperated managers a merry dance round the city; the man who once overslept and missed the first half of the game against Barcelona, turning up at half-time with his side losing 1-0 to score two and provide two more."

So the only thing missing is that he wasn't fat. I bet he is now though.

What a player.

Mentioned briefly in TL's reminder of what FLAIR is, and I think Djibril CISSE falls under most categories: flair HAIR, anger issues, off field SCANDAL (he was once accused but later cleared of being a WIFE BEATER), and to an extent a lazy attitude to playing and unfulfilled potential.
