Blow it out your arse Chappelli;

Chappell blasts "woeful" Prior
By Bruce Talbot

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has launched an extraordinary verbal attack on wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

The Sussex gloveman has been heavily criticised for his performances during the Test series against India and now Chappell has joined the debate.

Chappell, 63, speaking in the Daily Mail today, said: "I cannot see how England are going to win against decent sides with a wicketkeeper who is woeful. "Matthew Prior is so far off being an international wicketkeeper at Test level. In one-day matches he'll probably be terrific and that's fine, but Tests? Forget it.

"An old skipper of mine, Les Favell, said that once a wicketkeeper starts costing you games he's got to go. Matthew Prior is in that category.

"England have got to seriously look at how they judge wicketkeepers because they are making huge mistakes. What we've seen lately with Geraint Jones and Matt Prior just isn't going to work. They got very lucky in the Ashes in 2005 but they've got to revisit the way they select wicketkeepers.

"No way in the world are they going to win against Australia with a wicketkeeper like that. He's going to let somebody off - Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Clarke - and boy you're going to pay heavily for that."

advertisementChappell also blasted England coach Peter Moores, who worked with Prior during his time at Sussex.

He added: "It's an indictment on the current England coach. I'm told he's had Prior since the Under 13s and if that's the footwork from that coach from under 13 to now, they've got a problem."

What a dick. Prior has come into an unsettled side missing their front line attack. Had to put up with extremely wayward bowling in the West Indies test matches and was up against an extremely good side in India. He's only played 7 tests is it?

Needs time to settle and should improve. No need to launch an attack like that, especially on a new coach.

I cannot help think that with Prior England have picked the same issues that were there with Jones, a goodish bat and OKish glove work. However like Jones when one part starts to suffer people pick up on it.

However Prior needs to be given 12 months to prove one way or another that he should or should not be in the team. If he has a poor winter, then England do need to look at the situation, but they should not be changing it now, as much as anything Davies is not ready.

It'll be interesting to see just when Hodd's name starts to get touted as his replacement and if Ambrose is actually recognised as a serious contender for the gloves.

It's crazy we're still talking about it. Read shiould have had the spot as his for years by now.

I agree Prior isnt upto it, with eaither the gloves or the bat in my opinion.

He scored Runs against a West Indian side that possibly had the worst attack i can remember at test level and must have averaged about 10 against India this series as well as dropping pretty straight forward chances behind the stumps.

Hodd does look very good this season, and i still think we should have stuck with him on finals day

Are Jones and Prior World Class keepers? No, not right now anyway

Is Prior bette than Jones? I think so

Is there anyone who is a better bet than Prior right now? Probably Not

Will Prior improve ? Yes, I believe he will

Will Prior ever be world class ? If he is given the backing, and he works damn hard, possibly

Exactly. His batting is not that weak. His glovework is excellent and if you take your chances, you out pressure on the opposition.

Neither Prior not Jones score enough runs to compensate for the glove errors, however, in defence of Prior, the bowling attack is much weaker without Hoggy, Harmy and Freddie.

People keep touting Ambrose as a replacement for Prior, but having seen him play for Warwickshire against Sussex last Friday in the Championship I thought he was very ordinary. He put down a couple of chances in Sussex's second innings (Nash I beleive) and let through a lot of byes...

Matt Prior needs to be given 12 months to see if he is good enough. He does need to work on his footwork, but Chappelli is a c*ck.
