Who will limit the cyclist to 20MPH ?
A lot of them travel faster than this, but with no identify marks or registrations there will no way to stop them.

in town? 20 miles an hour? On a bicycle? A lot of them?

you've either

a) made this up
b) been told this by someone who made it up

Regardless of whether the policy is a good one or not it is disgusting to be spending £1.5m of tax payers money on it during the current climate. I watched the budget webcast ( sad I know ! ) and the bleating from the Greens about central government cuts meaning the council was going to be short of money was constant. They then said not increasing council tax by 3.5% would mean a shortage of £3m - well here's half of that money Councillor Kitcat !!!!!!!!!!

The policy is expensive, ill thought out and unenforceable. Let's face it, most of us will ignore it.

Exactly this! They have already wasted hundreds of thousands on cycle lanes that aren't used, destroyed the appearance of some of our oldest avenues, and clobbered the motorist again with ridiculous parking charges.
Not all peple are capable of cycling, and not all live on convenient bus routes to get from A to B.
As a B&H ratepayer, I don't think this council is representing me at all. i just hope that the opposition parties are strong enough to combine their resources to slow this green bandwagon down before the next lot of elections.

I'm not sure what you mean by current climate given that the government estimates one death on the road can cost up to £1 Million, ignoring the massive heartache that's involved.

I'd hope that most of us would take the time to establish a reasonable & balanced view about why a reduced speed limit is being brought in, understand the benefits in terms of lives saved and then not break the law by ignoring it to gain an indispensable 1/2 minute here or there.

Do you include yourself in the "most of"?

Are there any other laws do you intend to break?

......., just askin' (for the public record like.......)

Speak for yourself. The rest of us have some consideration of the roads, pavements and pedestrians in residential areas. You think a price can be placed on saving lives? Charming.

I love it when you're in Daily Mail rant mode - it's hilarious.

They - any administration of any colour - have to govern for all of Brighton & Hove, and in some places, people are driving like idiots. You're one of the first to say 'someone should be doing something' - so when they do, you still moan. Interesting that you're going against your beloved Tories on this too, as they're not against it. If they'd had brought this in - and in some areas they did - you'd have said 'good idea, about time...' (as would I). But it's 'the f***ing Greens' innit...?

For me, I actually agree with the Conservative standpoint - not against it, but would like to know more about its enforceability. Hence the consultation. I don't actually believe that this will ultimately be rolled out across every area in the entire city, but we'll see.

Spot on!That is the right thing to ask.Thankfully,I don't live in Brighton and always thought the Green experiment would end in tears and I'm sure it will.
Trouble is,there are too many weirdos in the city who thought it would be 'nice and trendy' to vote Green, and although their address is Brighton, they are really residents of LA-LA land.
I thought Brighton was meant to be a place that wanted to attract visitors.Doesn't seem so,what with the parking charges and the general intention of making life as difficult as possible for motorists. We live near Chichester and go to Bournemouth rather than Brighton.Further away but far less hassle.
Anyway,a message of hope to Brighton residents............come to your senses and get rid of these nutters as soon as you can!

Yeah, let's bring back the Tories and have some real f***ing chaos...

Love the fact that you think you know what's going on across the city, what the nature of local politics is here, when you admit you don't live here and don't know what it means for everyone.

Large One,you seem to express opinions on quite a wide range of topics on this board...........say 42,171 posts.Expert on everything are you,or just a smug know all,who loves to see his name up on t'internet!
I am just as entitled to my opinion as you are but I am not quite so taken in by the Greens.

The parking charges are going to effect the tourist trade, a trade that many Brighton residents rely on. The green party are fools.

Road users who are guaranteed to totally ignore a 20mph limit................

BUS DRIVERS

TAXI DRIVERS

LORRY DRIVERS

MOTORCYCLISTS

All seem to be immune in my experience

Not a reason to take no action to appropriately reduce speed limits but as a general truism it always seems to be the saloon car driver who is the proverbial whipping boy

Add cyclists to that list

So many posting along the lines of 'saving lives'. I've never had a problem crossing the road. I was taught. 'Pavement safe, for humans. Road unsafe, for cars' I was about 4. Funnily enough that message stuck and I learnt all about the nice green cross code man and how it was MY OWN responsibility to negotiate traffic safely. Once again the emphasis seems to be on blaming the car user for ALL accidents! I've seen plenty of dumb idiots who dodge traffic recklessly crossing the road. Trouble is, when they get whacked and are suffering (deservedly in my opninion) they want to blame anyone or anything but themselves! Yes car users need to exercise all possible care when driving but then so should pedestrians too.

Cyclists bombing along like nutters in residential areas are in the same arsehole group as boy racers.

In my opinion anyone goes 20mph on a push bike in a residential area deserves to end up in A&E sooner rather than later and hopefully it will be just them not them and a pedestrian.

unfortunately 20mph cannot be enforced by law so spending £1.5m on it and relying on drivers good will is a complete waste of money!
spending 1.5m on much needed sports and swimming facilities a much better idea!

I will oppose the policy in any consultation. After that - don't know but given the number of people that break the current limit I'd suggest that figure will increase significantly.

Speak for yourself. The rest of us have some consideration of the roads, pavements and pedestrians in residential areas. You think a price can be placed on saving lives? Charming.

Sometimes you really make yourself look rather arrogant. Never purchased the Daily Mirror and you assume that I'm an out and out Tory voter ( making a complete ass of yourself as you know I'm not ). I actually voted Green last local election - very foolishly. The local election before that I voted Labour.

I couldn't give a toss if the Tories and Labour support the idea - I don't. Introducing a 20mph limit doesn't stop people driving like idiots and spending £1.5m on it when that could be spent on much more worthwhile projects shows only a simpleton would think it a good idea.

You still seem to object to people criticising your beloved Greens - any anti-Green post and you're there with your holier than thou attitude. Yet in one of your recent posts you claim to be balanced - hmmmm ...... I'll let other people judge that but at least one post in this thread suggests other people may not agree. Your anti-Tory ramblings suggest you're far from balanced.

EDIT - you accuse HB&B of having anti-Green agenda, well you're the exact opposite of him - absolutely pro-Green. What are you going post when the Greens are wiped out at the next local election ? I know you think that won't happen but I haven't ever seen such a large amount of negative feedback both on here and on the Argus website / letters page for either Labour or the Tories.
