This is bad news.

On the basis that Maggofin is correctly signed as the overseas player next year, we in theory need to find a British qualified spinner.

Within English cricket there is really only Swann, Monty and Kerrigan and we are getting rid of them all.

Beer will play the rest of this season, but other than the odd flash of talent, he has not really taken his chances. In a way he is the Sussex Jake Robinson, fans are desperate for him to succeed as he is a local lad, but has maybe over hyped.

The single rudest famous person I have ever met.

It's never a good sign when you read a story about a bloke urinating on a bouncer and think "that doesn't suprise me really".

Has Mushy been keeping himself fit?

He's only played one game this season hasn't he? he looked alright, he's record after six games isn't bad and he's useful with the bat

Essex does seem the place to go for players who could never do it consistently for England go (Shah, Bopora, Foster)

Interestingly, I see Somerset have this week agreed a deal to sign Piyush Chawla who had a sensation month with us in 2009. Overseas player though.

Disastrous news for Sussex. RHB can do one now as well.

Bopara and Foster have played for Essex all their career, before they ever even played for England. Darren Gough spent a couple of years there after injuries meant he was past his best.

Sad what's happened with Panesar. The incident with the bouncer made his position untenable, but he already wasn't in a position of strength given his bowling average this year and the furore with him fielding under-arm earlier in the season. Weird to think less than a year ago he was such a big part of England winning the test series in India, yet now his international career looks like it could be over.

To paraphrase Sheryl Crow slightly, a change could do him good. New surroundings may help him. Some players can cope with turmoil off the pitch, others go into meltdown such as Graham Thorpe. Thorpe sorted his problems out and came back and extended his England career by a couple of years. Panesar needs the right people around him. If he gets back bowling well, he could realise his ambitions yet as spinners tend to peak later than seam bowlers. Graeme Swann barely got a look in for England until he was nearly 30. On a turning wicket and with his head right, Panesar is a handful for anybody. Just ask Sachin Tendulkar. Consistency and application, however, are the biggest obstacles to Monty.

Essex might be where he goes permanently, although don't rule out Northants, who unlike Essex, have a great chance of playing top division cricket next season and also have a history of preparing turning wickets that have suited their spinner of the day.
