I think we shuld go right back to how it used to be. Monarch, no parliament with most of us eating dung and getting killed by the French/Spanish etc.

I think democracy was a wonderful idea but unfortunately most people are too thick to be able to run their own lives let alone vote for who runs the country.

Bring back capital punishment, conscription, average life expectancy 34 and bubonic plague.

Fatbadger - Is it also true that the PM need never call an election? The 'Five Year' rule is just another convention. Theoretically can a PM just go on and on until the Monarch dissolves Parliament?

The amount of art that is in the palaces would raise money and again are her personal property as the paintings were given as presents to her ancestors.

Are they really her personal property. Any gifts given to a head of state because of their position are surely the property of the state. Just because generations of chinless Germans have had sole access to them doesn't make them their property.

It's one thing saying let's have a republic, let's do away with the monarchy, but how many of those people will actually get out and vote for a president? How many will even care?

Yes. Artists were summoned to paint portraits of the ancestors and paid so then handed down from grandfather to nephew to niece etc.

Not just Germans, there are Danes, Greeks, Scots and other bloodlines there as well.

Not true - the length of parliaments is limited to 5 years by the 1911 Parliament Act.

Falmer, soon...
Sorry to Hijack this thread but it's vaguely about constitutional reform.

If there's a better argument against hereditary peers than "Sir" Mark Thatcher, I've yet to hear it.

what a twat.

Why dont we just bypass the monarchy and sign all are sovereignty over to a foreign power, the politicians can lie about it and pretend it makes no difference.

Or has that already been done?:lolol:

It makes no difference President or Monarch, they still have to bow down to the EU Dictatorship.

Well, the government did say last year that, for the forseeable future, our foreign policy would not alter from the foreign policy of the USA.

I assume that's what you're talking about anyway.

As has already been pointed out on this thread, Mark Thatcher is not a peer - he is a baronet.

LEFTWING PROPGANDA ALERT

Notice how the leftie has constructed the poll.

This is a typical leftwing tactic to elicit the prefered responce.

ie
With no dont know or dont care option it invites posters to make a snap judgement about something they care little about and know even less. Often opting along lines that are "perceived" to be more socially acceptable.

It also trys to potray a minor marginal issue in a more populist light.

It like the poster has no credibility.

For someone who thinks in such manichaean ways as you, that is just plain stupid. Even by your standards, looney.

Maybe the "leftwing" bit was OTT(Or maybe not, I dont think that RM is in Mandelsons league so prolly innocent.) but statistically its crap for the reasons stated.

Take your point about the Baronet thing.
