Interesting thread and probably no "right" answer. I know it's already been mentioned but I've thoroughly enjoyed the irony of people complaining about social media and targeted adverts on a social media site full of targeted adverts (unless you're, y'know.....). But I've done this myself, complaining about Musk and moving from X to bluesky and it's Musk where some of the nuance lies. Very often people complaining about tech aren't really complaining about it at all (especially as they're almost certainly using it). They're complaining about the message and lifestyle it delivers.

Tech can be a force for good. It's absolutely true that heat pumps, smart meters and EVs are better for the environment than gas guzzling Volvos, coal fired power stations and non-recycled plastics. Only conservatives seem to be harking back to an era where the latter were used. And this is the Musk conundrum. On one hand a Bond villain using algorithms to push lies, conspiracy theory and neo-fascism. On the other a guy who developed an iconic EV and is following the human desire for exploration by pushing into space.

Ultimately tech is good and non tech is good. My morning routine involves both and, without it, my mental health would deteriorate immensely. The alarm goes on my smart phone, I wake up and I do a word puzzle on my smartphone to wake my brain up. Then I put the phone away and for the next 90 minutes or so I walk with a beautiful and crazy furry creature, I meet other people out walking, some with creatures and some without, and talk to them and the only "tech" I use is a lead and a tennis ball.

That goes for tech firms too. Heard of Wipro? Just another Indian services and tech co powered by globalisation right? Wrong. Also one of the most philanthropic organisations in the world dedicated to giving 66% of its economic ownership to good causes. That's more than most charities.

Balance is absolutely possible and it's nonsense to suggest anything else IMO.

Why do you find what other people do depressing? It’s their life not yours.
Have you never looked up information whilst out and about? Finding directions, paying for parking etc? You have no idea what people are searching for or doing on their phone one may need a washing machine another maybe paying a bill, booking a tradesman, replying to posts like these. It’s not really absurd when you think about it.
Maybe depressing is the wrong word, but to use a highly chintzy scenario, I'm so often stood on Lewes train station platform watching crows trading branch positions in the tall trees near the Dripping Pan, or checking the fantastic floral display along platform two, even smelling the roses in bloom in the variety of planters, actually being there, while almost no one else there is remotely present because they're too busy checking out what Logan Paul is posting up, how K-Pop band BlackPink bought some ramen noodles for the lols, or what latest bollocks @Justice has posted on NSC and responding to it etc.

Don't worry about it. Every time I post I feel for you having to suffer the internet, so I'll leave it there. I hope you make it to the pub soon, with friends/family/anyone who can bring themselves to step away from a digital device. Which, in your mind, is clearly nigh on impossible :lolol:

Exactly. People are more than happy to embrace innovation when it suits them, or when they understand it or can work it. But when it becomes too much, it's to blame for all of the problems with society.

DAMN YOU, BIG TECH!

I wish I had this way of seeing things. Life would be so easy.

Friend depressed?
"Just choose to be happy!"
Friend suffer from anorexia?
"Just choose to eat!"
Friend suffer from pressure or stress of modern society?
"Just choose to stop living in the modern world!"

Old people moaning about the ‘modern world’ shocker.

The past was never as good as you thought was and the present isn't as bad as you think it is.

For context I’m a boomer.

his is the modern world

What kind of fool do you think I am?
To think I know nothing of the modern world
All my life it's been the same
I've learnt to live by hate and pain
It's my inspiration drive

I've learnt more than you'll ever know
Even at school I felt quite sure
That one day I would be on top
Another dot upon the map
The teachers who said I'd be nothing

This is the modern world that I've learnt about
This is the modern world we don't need no one
To tell us what's right or wrong
This is the modern world

Say what you like 'cause I don't care
I know where I am and going to
It's somewhere I won't preview
Don't have to explain myself to you
I don't give two fucks about your review

This is the modern world that I've learnt about
This is the modern world we don't need no one
To tell us what's right or wrong

Modern word, this is, this is, this is
This is, this is, this is, this is
Hey, we don't need no one
To tell us what's right or wrong

This is the modern world
This is the modern world

Day off today . . . . . . . Spent hours in the workshop . . . Tinkering with Lambretta bits . . . I did have the wireless on in the back ground . . . . . Mondays 'off' are great . . . .everyone else is at work/school whatever . .. . And its a quiet day . . . . Sheds/caves/garages/allotments/gardens/greenhouse's. . Are all the best mental health aids. .
That’s why I enjoy my job, nothing better than getting the tools out and creating perfection for the customer. Before I know it the days gone and I’ve often missed lunch.

It's ok for me. Retired at 48 and have really enjoyed the last 15 years doing what I want and seeing the grand kids grow up.

Indeed.

I‘ve missed out on this thread this evening, as I got home from work, ate dinner with my wife and one son, then went and played five a side football, and on to the pub, with my older son, and 5 of our mates.

Don't treat social media as a thing to do. Just use it to fill the gaps between your ‘things’.
100% this

Work was definitely better in the 1980's - 1990's when companies still looked after their staff to some extent. With all the extra technology, how come relative pay and benefits have fallen dramatically in the last 30 years.
When I started work at a large insurer we had:
Reasonable pay
Flex time
Decent Holidays
Final Salary Pension Scheme
Company Sports Clubs
Discounted mortgages
Work minibus travel
Extravagant Christmas Parties
Modern Offices

The technology was a mainframe computer system, and a telephone.
Rose coloured glasses to some extent - I give you: gender discrimination, racial discrimination, bigotry, sexual orientation discrimination, no health and safety, no awareness of mental health issues, groping, smoking in the office...

True - It’s also nonsense to suggest people don’t have a choice about how much they use social media/electronic devices- which is a point I made above.

It isn't an issue at all. It might be a matter of envy for some, but be honest, all the people owning nice three and four bedroom homes are not just from your parents' era. It's wrong to pit generation against generation.
You’ve simplified what I said and overlooked the post I was replying to.

Nonetheless, whether you choose to admit it or not, there is a huge generational divide in this country. Every available statistic proves that, and illustrates how much harder life is for those 40 and below compared to previous generations. Baby boomers stripped the country dry and pulled the ladder up after - it just is what it is. Call it envy if you will, but I’d just call it a simple analysis of the data available.

Of course, if you’d read the post I was replying to, the poster was from that generation and identifies how much easier everything was.

Big fan of cutting edge medicine, heat pumps and EVs then? Good man.
Yes, no, yes.
I have a heat pump going now, its a noisy bugger and only tolerated as I have earphones. Its one of those plug socket doowackeys, would be unnecessary if investment was in geothermal, hydro electric and tidal/wave. But oh no, we have sunk all the money into shit stuff like magic mirrors and bird choppers.

You should re-title this thread as "Old man shakes fist at the sky and screams".

I like modernity, I want to go live on Mars.

Well, you won’t. Sorry to break it to you like this. So get shaking yer fist too, your time will come soon enough! :)

I’m 50 next year so I’m Gen X. I’ve had a home computer since I was about 7 so technology has always fascinated me and I love the time we live in. Never been stressed by technology and have made my career out of it.

Technological advancement has meant twice my mum has survived cancer by picking up problems before any symptoms were really visible. Without those my kids would be growing up having never known their grandmother.

Technology is neither good or bad. It’s how it’s used that matters.
I love that
Nothing is neither good or bad…it just is
That if you can get your thinking mind to shut up is the way back to simplicity and a lot more peace at least that’s how I’ve found it
