Agreed, and he should probably have given it a go. But then we're supposed to be a passing team, waiting for the right opportunity to play the right ball, etc etc...El Abd just "slinging one in" is hardly condusive to that

There were four Albion players around the penalty spot waiting for the cross - it WAS 'the right opportunity'.

Excellent, people frustrated with our lack of imagination with the ball were directly responsible for the Albion going 1-0 down. What is wrong with some people?

I think you are over-analysing it tbh. If you move from CB to RB it doesn't become a completely different SPORT. You still play with the same ball. Swinging that cross over (with his good foot) is technically no different to him chipping a forty yard pass across his own back line, which he does twenty times a game.

Do you remember when El Abd used to play fullback at Withdean ? He was a complete CARCRASH of a defender in that role, whether it was LB or RB. Clumsy, hopeless going forward, and could be relied on to drop at least one clanger per match which may or may not have costed us a goal. He was also shuffled around as a defensive midfielder, at which he was equally hapless.

Gus arrived, declared him to be "the best defender at the club" (to gales of laughter), gave him a new contract, and played him at CB. Nowhere else, just CB. Result ? Player of the Season. Thats all he can do - we've SEEN it for ourselves.

Watching him in the first half hour last night was like watching him from 5 years ago. I felt sorry for him, and was INTENSELY relieved when he slotted back in next to Gorgeous.

I really don't think the people complaining last night were complaining about how we pass the ball, but they were complaining about the tempo.

Last night was the first time I had really criticised the the style of play...We were a goal down and we still never got out of second gear and this is the problem.

Millwall on the other hand played a high tempo/mixed style of long & short...EXACTLY how we were playing at the beginning of the season.

I honestly don't think anyone wants to see us lumping the ball to our current strikers, but it is incredibly frustrating when at 1-0 down at home we the slow/predictable build up play, more suited to an away game.

I would guarantee you though that if we played that way on Saturday, we would probably have more joy than we would if we are playing at home.

One final point I'd make is that Mike Bailey got sacked for playing this style of football in the 80's and this despite leading us to our best ever league position. I hope Gus learns to adapt to avoid the same fate.

He was clearly out of his comfort zone and out of position - which is exactly my point as to why people thought moaning and shouting abuse would help the situation / was justified.

I don't think anyone was singling out El Abd, at least not from where I was sitting. He was just caught up in the general dogs dinner of a setup we had from kickoff, and the crowd was naturally getting frustrated as (forget the formation) we were playing like a herd of diseased goats.

I never like seeing Bridcutt / Hammond / Crofts all starting so feared the worse when I saw the lineup, as those three in CM never seems to function very well. And in front of a back 3, playing wingbacks, it was one of those experiments we do see from time to time from Gus. But to his credit he changed it and we salvaged a point. Lesson learned I guess.

Oh do behave. As i've said 27 times on this thread, the fact he was playing out of position was a major factor for him not being so 'imaginative'. And maybe read the post where i said i'd used a sensationalist thread title. You chose to ignore that.

I wish people would stop yelling FORWARD.... It really really pisses me off .

Why don't they realised it's not the direction that's the f***ing problem, it's the TEMPO. ..

Completely wrong, I reckon. If anything, I'd give El Abd the assist.

Buckley had the ball in the right corner, and had two defenders to beat. He drew them in, then rolled it ten yards back to El Abd, to swing a cross in. We had four men in the box waiting.

Instead of putting that cross in, El Abd turned back, and passed the ball back to the halfway line, where it was intially mis-controlled, and ultimately posession lost.

Problem was more in El Abd's decision making than any 'moaners' imo, like.

Exactly how I saw it as I stood up in East Upper and shouted 'get it in the fecking box'.People around me probably thought sit down you old fart - seconds later 0-1!! They dont realise I've got 22years experience of Sunday League Footie in the seventies-nineties

Love our FANS........

Guy in front me usually waits for any hint of an error and then moans at Barnes every time he goes near the ball and at Gus to take him off. He cheered himself up last night by waiting for an error and picking out David as his NEW target.

Whatever floats your boat I guess.
