There were plenty of times in the 80s when going to the football was a bit of a shit experience for all but the most entrenched football fans.

Especially for the away fan. There are people moaning about how long it takes to get a train etc, I can remember walking miles back from the ground to the station in police escorts, three that spring to mind are Maine Road, Chester and Birmingham.

Although it does seem that train travel to away games then was much easier

I saw loads of scuffles on the station last night - I luckily managed to meet up with my son whose 17 after the match and we caught the train home together - we got back pretty quick - and were making a cup of tea when his mates turned up at the house - one of the lads - the smallest one had been nutted on the train and was sporting a swollen black eye!!! He's only a slight lad - looks about 14!!! He said he wasn't even doing anything and the guy just laid into him.

He's ok though we sorted him out x

Stories like this really make me angry.

During the Withdean years I never experienced any problems with Millwall. Maybe due to the reduced numbers & probably only season ticket holders getting the few away tickets available? I thought they had cleaned up their act to a degree when Theo Dragons den 'whatever his name was' started dishing out life bans.

I never had or saw any problems last night, but reading the stories here today, its quite apparent plenty did. Why should an innocent youngster who wants to wear his teams colours suffer personal injury from some inbred knuckle dragging retard who's stuck in a time warp? If they behave like scum, they need to be treated as such. For a start, their allocation should be slashed next year with different travel arrangements. Bollocks to their 10% right. They've forfeited that right by their behaviour.

Not all Millwall supporters are lowlife scum. Sadly more than a small minority are it would seem? Brighton & Hove Albion decided to take a new approach to visiting supporters this season. Its obvious that *certain* teams followings can't be trusted to not abuse that new approach. If it means Millwall supporters being kept behind then herded onto special buses then so be it. They behave like they its "the old days". They deserve to be treated like its "the old days."

This is why I think a reduced allocation would be appropriate, should we play them again next season. The Millwall fans were never any bother at Withdean and they always brought their full complement of 900 but I imagine the strict criteria for those tickets weeded out the general pond life.

Thats all very well but when next years game v Milwall comes around a good few will not go because of what happened or what they experienced. And can you blame them, who wants to put your kids at risk or your elderly parent. Its just how some people view Millwall fans and some fans will give it a miss.

Clearly these are the games that people should be giving a miss then, I bet there's 1000s if fans that give millwall, Cardiff, Leeds games a miss for that very reason. It's a fact of football I would never take my kids to a game where I thought it would kick off or wanted to introduce someone to the game. Plus on the flip side I've season Albion fans acting in the same way loads of times, in fact I've seen fans of man u and Chelsea acting like that.

With regard to minority vs majority generalisations of fans, I had a peruse of some threads on the Millwall forum. This one is interesting >> Viewing a thread - we have to lose the idiots

This thread shows the mental capacity of Millwall's "hooligan" element. f*** me, attacking your own fans? You'd think you'd recognise whose your own fans unless you don't go too often... Didn't Millwall have history requirements for tickets? Like 3 years worth of purchasing history?

Some of my business colleagues are Millwall fans (yes there are some that are human....just). Spoke to one who was at the Amex last night, he was made aware that amongst the away contingent were so called 'fans' who are currently banned from The Den ! How can that be allowed to happen ?

I'm facinated by the "sanitised" comments...

As someone who takes an 8yo to matches, frankly I'm glad there's somewhere we can go to watch a match in a safe (yes.. sanitised!) environment where he doesn't have to be exposed to attitudes and behaviours that should have died out decades ago.

In my experience, the Amex is amongst the most sanitised grounds around, but then it also has some of the highest [percentage of capacity] attendences in the Championship - facts that I have NO doubt are very very closely correlated!

Like it or not, football is a business and the owners of that business are interested in maximising their investment and if this means that they heavily restrict the away ticket allocations of clubs that damage their business model, then I for one am would be happy to see the next Albion/Millwall game without any Millwall fans present and the next Millwall/Albion game at the Amex on the big screen (with no Millwall fans present). Sanitised... yes, Safe... DEFINITELY!

Worthing
Whilst queing for the train at Falmer to return to Brighton a big group of middle-aged Millwall nuts started the usual songs then "Brighton ...they take it up the @rse" , few Brighton fans returned with "Millwall, Millwall give us a kiss" , the Millwall fans obviously cant like banter as they got in right old state issuing threats, screaming vile abuse , pushing others to try and climb over the station railings , mouthing off and they looked more wild than the police dogs at Brighton station , something should be done as Brighton fans shouldnt have to be mixed up with that type of knobheads after the game.

I had the pleasure of taking my father to last night's match, the first time that he has seen the Albion since Zamora played for us!

Queuing for the train after the game (in the pen between the platform & the ramp), some Millwall fans were singing & shouting anti West Ham songs (really tasteful with the kids around us), to what appeared other Millwall fans in the pen. Then this oik decides to lay in & have a punch up. Old bill rush in & drag him away.

Moments later we are on the platform, train arrives, step in - just about to leave & more Millwall pile in - kicks off again/punch ups in our carriage. Police were quick to it - another few 'fans' dragged off.

What was that all about?

Millwall v Millwall
Millwall v West Ham
Millwall v BHA

As for my 70 year old father........he won't be attending an Albion game I suspect until Zamora returns.

Shame

Couldn't you of chosen a different game to take your dad to? What were you expecting from Millwall. Hugs, kisses and a bunch of Roses?!

I dont understand the attempt at a moral high ground. Did anyone read the argus last week? It was Brighton that were involved in a pre arranged punch up involving 100 Brighton/Spurs fans that resulted in jail sentences for Brighton fans of up to 3 years wasn't it? Those in glass houses and all that. I didnt go last night but I doubt the trouble was anything like Brighton at Chesterfield a couple of years back. Can someone change the name of this thread to "Stones in glass houses"

There's a huge difference between a pre-arranged fight between like minded individuals and random acts of violence. This is acknowledged on the Millwall forums too.
