Is it possible that he was radicalised in/because of guantanamo?
I know there are stats for this sort of thing in 'normal' prisons, where people become 'more' criminal after a stint inside.
It's obviously pure speculation in this precise case, and therefore probably not entirely productive to debate, but in general this is certainly plausible. If I were detained without trial and then tortured for years, I can imagine it would cause me to bear some kind of grudge. If you were partly radicalised beforehand, being tortured by those very people who you've been told are infidels, might well push you over the line into terrorist.
