In my opinion, this story is too big to rest solely in the political threads, which many have on ignore for various reasons.

Mike Amesbury (soon to be former) MP suspended and whip withdrawn - you’d hope for an arrest in the coming days.

Absolutely disgusting.

Bloke must have said something pretty rotten to him to garner that response. No excuse though, MP should have walked away.

I’d really hope that wouldn’t be his defence. “Your honour, he was mean about me and my family”.

Any hope of claiming self defence is kaput with that video. The guy was turning away when Amesbury sucker punched him.

He’ll plead guilty at the first opportunity, receive either a community order or suspended prison sentence for ABH, and lose his job.

What an idiot.

He will go to jail for that.

Hopefully.

I agree, but from the BBC article linked.

In July 2023, a 56-year-old man was found guilty of stalking and harassing Amesbury at his constituency office and in town.

No doubt the police will be charging him soon, and then the legal course of action will take place.

Thanks @jcdenton08 - I was sitting here eating dinner thinking the same, and was going to move the posts out of the thread where they currently reside.

It's not a "Labour meltdown" thing at all, it's a "cowardly (pissed up probably) thug horrendously assaults someone in the street" thing.

He's genuinely lucky that he didn't do serious harm to the bloke he smashed in the face.

His statement looks very poor now - he must have hoped there wasn't a video of the actual assault, just the one of the aftermath that circulated yesterday.

In related news, the government are releasing some prisoners early, which should mean there is space for thugs like Amesbury to take a long, hard think about their actions.

There is an other video that shows him going back to him and making comments about being threatened, looks like he realised what he had just done and was trying to build a defence.

He was quite open (correctly) in calling for jail time for misleading posts on the riots and called for Raab to resign

I expect him to resign shortly and to see jail
Time.

I think it better for the police/CPS to find out the details: we don't know the back story - and I suspect for most of us there could be a set of events that would make that behaviour understandable (if not acceptable).

Yep. I read there are loads of fairly f***ed-up and vulnerable people, including women, who are on jail sentences as brief as 2 weeks. Utterly pointless, as they lose what job they may have had, and often become homeless as a consequence, and are back inside on some other low grade act of tomfoolery in the space of weeks. All part of the previous government's 'tough stance'. Sadly it will cost a lot of money to 'support' vulnerable low grade persistent criminals. A discussion for another place and time, but one that needs to be had.
