Profumo scandal in the 1960s (Defence Minister who slept with 'call-girl' who was also sleeping with a Soviet diplomat, a major national security risk). Profumo exacerbated his treachery by lying in the House of Commons, initially denying any relationship with the call-girl.
Stephen Ward’s trial judge was a disgrace.

George Brown often seriously/offensively drunk, as Foreign Secretary, at meetings with foreign ambassadors, diplomats and leaders mid-1960s.
John Stonehouse 'faking' his own death in mid-70s and creating a new identity to escape major debts.
Cecil Parkinson getting his secretary, Sara Keays, pregnant in the mid-80s, while Thatcher was preaching 'family values' and the sanctity of marriage.
Alan Clark sleeping with the wife of a South African High Court Judge and the two daughters in the mid-80s (family values of a kind, I guess!).
Ron Brown prosecuted for criminal damage late 1980s.
Several Tory MPs blackmailed into voting for Maastricht Treaty ratification in 1993 (whips threatened to reveal dirty secrets about their private lives if they didn't)
Peter Mandelson resigned twice as a Cabinet Minister under Blair due to serious irregularities over his conduct and financial dealings.
Chris Huhne imprisoned for 'perverting the course of justice' in 2003 (claimed his wife was driving, in order to avoid penalty points for speeding)
Several MPs involved in fraudulent expenses claims 2009 ('cleaning moats and duck pond'!).
Neil Parrish caught watching porn on his phone in the House of Commons, in the presence of horrified women MPs, 2022.

Not sure that bad behaviour has actually increased, rather 24/7 media, social media, smartphones (covertly filming bad behaviour) and CCTV all makes us more aware of it, and it's 'good' media headlines or stories; the public love being shocked by a scandal.
That is a well researched list well done.

However, no one on that list has been accused of either punching someone or sexually assaulting someone while in the Commons.

I expect the sleaze, the affairs, the financial irregularities but actually committing offences against the person which includes sexually assaulting a woman while carrying out one’s duties at Westminster, that’s a new one on me.🤷🏻‍♂️

More here on the story.

What a sleaze bag he is. Well if this was America we’d probably elect him president on the basis of that so thank fck for small mercies the UK electorate doesn’t tolerate this behaviour

Margaret Ferrier MP knowingly took a long train journey with Covid, a criminal offence, she lied, yet was convicted. Tried to hold onto her lucrative position.
Fiona Onasanya for caught lying about a motoring offence to pervert the course of justice, jailed. Greedy person fought tooth and nail to hold her lucrative position.
Eric Joyce MP - top expenses claimer, drink driver, headbutted/punched folk in Parliament of his party and others, convicted of assault elsewhere, convicted of having indecent images of very young children on his pc.

I was thinking the same thing. In America we would at least nominate him for president.

No one is tarring anyone with the same brush but getting so drunk you end up sexually assaulting a woman in a working environment is not acceptable and is still an assault and still way below the standards you should expect from elected MPs - he would have been thrown out of the party probably if it weren’t for the fact he lost his seat before the investigation was complete.

Edit - Fully expecting the pro-Tory NSCers to troll me/this thread because apparently when the lowlife behaviour of one of their own comes to light they feel unable to condemn it.

The standards of both these MPs are sorely lacking - I am just asking if it has always been like this?
Why is there a need for a bar in the commons in the first place?

Hasn't there been a few incidents there in recent times... maybe they should get rid

Society has a sprinkling of dodgy people, and they're going to find their way into many professions, unfortunately.

It's important not to tar everyone with the same brush when stories of bad characters come to public attention.

There are literally hundreds of MPs who are decent folk, working hard to serve their constituencies.
This is true.

Robert Venables KC a "well respected" tax barrister has been charged with 2 counts of err "cheating the public revenue" ie tax fraud. One charge covers from 2013 to 2022 and the other from 2018 to 2022.

Had also been behind a tax avoidance scheme, quickly made useless by George Osborne.

Why was a current news thread deleted that reported the disgraceful sexual misconduct of a Tory MP while in the House of Commons on a young female member of staff?

Of all the crap threads started on NSC ….

At least amend the title of this thread to reflect that it is not just about Mike Amesbury but also about Aaron Bell .😳

He wasn’t elected to serve the electorate and living on our taxes.

There is a difference.

If we are going to start saying there’s bad people in all walks of life the list will be endless and you might as well say that MPs don’t need to behave according to a higher standard of conduct than any other tom, Dick and Harry.

Would we be making this much fuss over a physical assault if it was just Gazza the mechanic from the local garage losing his shlt down the local on a Friday night?

Robert Venables is a barrister, a KC, an advocate in court. He helps form tax law by precedent.

He should uphold the highest of standards and ethics, always act lawfully.

On a par with MP's imho. The main difference is that he didn't face a public election.
