On the Sunday Supplement this morning they said the 12 point deduction can be applied to next season. Doesn’t that quash the rumour about the bet ?

I think the rules are that if you get relegated without the deduction then it is applied from the start of next season. It will also start from next season if applying it this season has no affect.

These are an extraordinary set of circumstances though. When clubs framed that rule it wasn't envisaged that a club would deliberately go into admin in order to be relegated. If there is a conspiracy to get one up on the bookies, then, by applying that rule, the EFL could be party to that conspiracy.

There's a lot to untangle at Wigan and it's early days, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that there could be criminal charges brought against club officials and there's even a chance they could be brought against employees of the EFL. It's an unholy mess but the EFL could sidestep a lot of it by applying the penalty next season.

Very much this. The EFL has a chance here to apply common sense and salvage something from the mess they have made by nodding through the two takeovers.

However, there are other fingers pointing at the EFL. They have failed to rule on points deductions for Derby's and Massive's sales of their ground to themselves. The precedents aren't good, as their ad hoc decision to deduct a meaningless number of points from Macclesfield for non-payment of wages has rival clubs fuming. A listen to El Presidente's very fine Price of Football podcast is very instructive on this..
