Middlesbrough pitch invasion

We need to move on from this game, we have three games to play (hopefully) to get into the premier league. Lets focus on that rather than finding more stuff to complain about from Saturday. It's over, we didn't go up automatically, move on

The pitch invasion was unsurprising but Middlesbrough have been warned before about flares. There's another thread with a copy from their local paper.

I did wonder if they'd have problems because of the flares. Certainly been warned enough and would appear their extra measures didn't prevent people getting them in

Obviously it didn't happen, but with the fans gathering on the advertising hoardings, I did wonder what would happen if a Brighton player broke, rounded the keeper and hit the ball into the open goal, only for a fan to run on and stop it going in.

The ref can't give the goal, because the ball didn't go in, and he's not allowed to assume it would have no matter how obvious it is.
He can't give a penalty because no one in the Middlesbrough team committed an offence.
As best I can work out it would be a drop ball on the edge of the 18 yard box in line with the incident. Boro packing the box and block the shot.

The sporting thing would be for Boro to let us score a goal unopposed, but I don't think many people would expect them to actually do that.

We would have been screwed out of automatic promotion by a cheating fan. Would the FA deduct them points - we all know how loathe to act on promotion/relegation issues they are (they seemingly waited until the points deduction on Rotherham wouldn't affect things last season)? Would they still be able to take part in the play offs? Would making them go through the play offs really be punishment, since that's what would have happened without the cheating anyway?

I think you will find Mr Dean's action would be to send the player off who kick the ball towards the goal as it was clearly dangerous play as there was an innocent member of the public who could have been murdered be the ball.

Trust me i know. Might not have been many but it did happen

A dozen or so ran on the pitch on the final whistle but were sent back by the stewards. We then waited for the players to come back to celebrate. At 3-1 most Walsall fans had already left.

They examined bags as we went in. There were pat downs & metal detectors for the men, but I wasn't searched. If that's what Boro did with their own fans, then it would have been easy for females to take them in.

That last line is what struck me more than the first bit....seriously there weren't that many coming over giving it large

Agreed, there were over 30000 Boro fans celebrating and only a handful of idiots. Incidentally there were BHA fans trying to goad Boro fans when we scored. Its football and it happens. I wouldn't do it. Equally most Boro wouldn't.

I walked around the back of their main stand afterwards, with several others in colours, and we were roundly applauded. All clubs have their idiots. I find most Boro fans good, honest, genuine fans, and were great hosts on Saturday. I wish them the very best next season. What does however need looking at was the pitch invasion prior to the final whistle, which clearly influenced the ref to blow the final whistle when he did.

Eight minutes extra were up. No complaints there. Not sure what your point is.

TBH I left the ground with Mini as soon as it ended but trying to get out was slow and several of their fans were goading us.

Mini said we would have done the same and it was exactly correct, we just need to move on - play-offs so be it.

Match replayed behind closed doors.

Sadly we cannot move on from Stephens' suspension in the playoffs.

Seriously - you and your son would, if the roles were reversed, goad opposing fans? Am I understanding you right here?

I too was really disappointed in the way that a number of those fans behaved, especially the ones whoe were taking photos/videos of us on their phones whilst goading us.

In fairness, the police were monitoring the situation. I noticed that they were taking video evidence of what was taking place on the pitch right in front of us. The situation could have easily escalted had the police tried to intervene in the way that you suggest.

However, I also noticed that quite a number of Boro fans came over to applaud us during the pitch invasion.

The reason the Boro fans applauded you, is because you are a bloody good team. Best of luck with the play-offs.

I agree that most of the Boro fans were decent, but those classless tw*ts let them down.

Confirms what I suspect - it must be pretty terrifying to be an opposing player when this happens. You just have to take all the shit you get, hope no one gets too silly, and make your way to safety as quickly as you can.

I've got no criticism of Boro's stewards - these things just can't be stopped. Unfortunately Middlesbrough FC does seem to attract a fair number of utter twats.
