I'd find the idea that Israel hadn't targeted the hospital slightly more credible had they not hit two other hospitals and at least one school earlier in this conflict, not to mention the airstrikes on civilian convoys and the Rafah border crossing

The "stray missile which just happened to hit a car park full of fully fuelled cars where all the civilians were hiding" explanation just feels a bit too "workshopped" to me personally

Hamas and the IDF: two organisations with long documented histories of lying, obfuscation and spreading misinformation to manipulate the narrative to suit their own agenda.

And as for Hamas accusing Israel of war crimes, it's difficult to think of a bigger lack of self-awareness given the cold-blooded atrocities Hamas itself inflicted 10 days ago.

Those poor citizens of Gaza need someone with credibility to speak up on their behalf.

Like most others, I assumed that it was a result of an air strike, given what has been happening. But then it all seems so convenient for Hamas. A hospital of all places, perhaps with inflated death toll figures, plus the fact that Biden is visiting today, and they hope he will now put pressure on the Israelis to re-consider invasion plans, as well as gambling on international outrage to further put pressure on the Israeli government. A decision to cancel an invasion would greatly help Hamas to remain intact to a greater extent and thus be all too ready to continue their terrorism. It is indeed hard to think that they would knowingly kill their own to further their aims, regarding the victims as pawns, but it has been widely reported over the years that civilians are being used as human shields, so I would not put anything past such a foul organisation.
It’s a dreadful stretch to imply that Hamas would deliberately bomb its own hospitals to gain some PR benefit.

My position is that we simply don’t yet know the truth of what happened — and no one here does, despite the claim and counterclaim. All opinions are available if you read a range of news sources. I’m saying nothing until there’s more conclusive proof of whether this was an Israeli error or a Palestinian error.

It’s probably fair to say you’re quite heavily invested on one side of the argument. When you are, it’s easy to pick up points favourable to your position. I think it’s best that we wait, and try to keep an open mind on responsibility for this dreadful incident.

Agreed, but this is nothing new. It's been going on for decades. The standard Likud/Israeli PR machine is just to steamroller through an interview, speak over the interviewer, make accusations, and not give them a chance to speak. Mark Regev is an absolute master at it.
Yep. And, having worked with / for Israelis in the past I know it plays very well to their own supporters. Unfortunately, it makes many others think they care more about BBC reports than the deaths of hundreds of innocent people.

There are a few points here, and all feed into internet rumour.

My first thought was what a crude and evil thing to do. My brain assumed an air strike. But then I immediately thought that we should wait for evidence on that. Remember, neither that chap who is spokesman for the Israeli military or Hamas can be trusted to tell the truth. It seemed odd that a hospital would be hit. Logic says that is a huge own goal.

So I waited. Even the BBC said Israeli strike. My thought was 'You don't know that'. So I waited. Government's condemned. I waited. And now I despair.

I despair because countless more innocent lives are lost. And I also despair that the those with power and more knowledge and intelligence cannot wait for truth. The BBC were interviewing a doctor in Ramada who claimed it was a certain type of American made rocket because she had just read it from some specialist who none of us had ever heard of. 'Oh well. there you are' folk would say. The only place anyone resides by accepting that is a cauldron of speculation.

The first casualty of war is truth. Just don't let it be yours. It's a lesson for wider life these days. We live in a post truth world.

All we are left with is death and destruction, lies and deception. That we don't need to wait for the evidence of.

RIP to the innocents again. The most frequent cut and paste I'll ever use these rotten hours.

Bibi press conference now. He's gone early with comparing Hamas with the Nazis. Nailing Biden to the cross of unconditional support for Israel. Here comes Biden....

Slurred speech....same narrative about children hiding from people trying to murder them....promising to give what Israel 'needs' (arms).....blaming the explosion in the hospital in Gaza on 'friendly' fire (by Hamas). Looking forward to a 'thorough discussion'.

Embarrassing all round.

Sunak will be saying exactly the same thing as Biden when he arrives. The Israeli’s looked considerably shifty when Biden said we know the hospital attack wasn’t you.

I see what you are saying, of course, and yes, it does seem incredulous, but never forget that the mindset of fundamentalist muslim organisations such as Hamas is very different to our way of thinking. If I may give you an example; my mate was posted to Bosnia after the war as part of the peace keeping force out there. The war effectively ended when the Americans got involved, having tired , as they saw it, of mediocre European efforts to stop the violence. The one key element (along with many others, of course)for the US involvement was the missile attack on a crowded market scene in Sarajevo, killing score of innocent muslims. The Serbs got the blame, understandably, as they regularly shelled the city, but the British Army looked at several factors, and realised that the Muslims had actually done it to their own to sway American -and doubtless worldwide - public opinion. You will never see this in print and obviously it is anecdotal, but if true, -and I have no reason to doubt his assertion of muslim involvement, then it does rather show what could be done to pawns to further your cause.

It might be ironic that Hamas accuses Israel of war crimes but it doesn't make their claims less valid. War crimes covering decades no less.

As for Palestinians needing representation - Israel is partially responsible for the representation they have.

There is strong evidence that Israel helped to create Hamas - and supported/funded it for 20 years in an effort to divide and rule (undermining Fatah)

Explained here

Netanyahu was reported (by Israeli newspaper Hareetz) to have said “Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas,”

More detail here.

If the Hamas had dropped 500 of these types it would have been carnage. The rockets they sent last Saturday made a few holes in the ground nothing spectacular.

It seems Israel has used this particular lie before.

They used to have Yasser Arafat until Israel and Hamas sidelined him.

This Israeli colonel on the Today programme is doing his side no favours at all.

I’m no way expert enough to decide who is responsible for the attack but his interview was arrogant, hectoring, bullying and full of lies. That’s no way to get people in your side.
I saw another interview with the Israeli commander or general on Newsnight. Oddly, he had a Scottish accent. He absolutely refuted that there was a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. All innocent lives lost were the fault of Hamas, they take no responsibility.

It was extraordinary. It did remind me of Chemical Ali with the brazen lying.

i reckon whoever was responsible, the hopsital event may force Israel to rein in the rhetoric and descalate. they are in the frame because they've appear to be be indiscriminatly bombing, to aviod further accusations they can stop doing that.

America needs to do better than Biden V Trump.

Biden calling Hamas "the other team" is embarrassing and downplaying the incident and I'm assuming without all the evidence yet.
