..at 41 I went out and bought a "Sons of Anarchy" like cruiser motorbike, dead cool leather jacket, lost 4 stone, got an Asian girlfriend, stopped drinking beer and started drinking red wine, started taking work seriously and decided to go travelling one month every year (this year to a certain field in the corner of Sussex to watch Albion v Estbourne)....I'm a walking cliche but life is good.

As GNF says there can be a positive side.

Not so much MLC as it all began aged 35 ish
But, I had the money to buy a sh*t hot road bicycle, and the spare time to use it.
Dropped a couple of stone, and have never felt fitter.
All being well this time next year, I'll be boring you all senseless with he fact I will be off to the Pyrenees for a week, to ride from the Atlantic to The Med.

Is it just me or has anyone felt that middle age, not necessarily a crisis, feels like it hits you like a ton of bricks the moment you turn 40 as opposed to it being a gradual process from, say, 35 onwards.

Hair starts thinning and hairline starts receding and wrinkles seem to appear overnight. Is strange that I have never felt fitter yet still have major problems sleeping. Does insomnia get worse the older you get?

Well I did buy a Z4 for the summer which is now up for sale. So that might have been it. I'm 50 though, the new 40, apparently.

Don't forget the hair which will start to grow at an alarming rate from places you can't imagine. Nose, ears, eyebrows etc. What's more you won't notice it until after you've been talking to that pretty lady you always admired and finally got close to. An inch long eyebrow hair sticking straight out horizontally is common or a whole bunch of curly stuff coming out of your ear that you somehow missed growing

Brighton factually.....
You have nothing in common with the yoof anymore. despair at the current music and when you see a pretty girl with hardly anything on although the urge is still there, from somewhere in the back of your mind have concerns about how cold they will be later on at night !!

i didnt really get up to what most yoofs do when i was 16-25 as i was in the royal marines (although i did have a few 'adventures') :)
when i came out the forces i had a young family so had to be sensible....for a bit.
eventually the marriage went tits up in the late 80's and i went right off the rails for a while.....BUT when i hit 40, i shaved all my hair off for children in need one year.
ive always had a few tattoos....but when i hit 40 i kinda went mad for them, im 51 now and had another 2 only yesterday.
i suppose my wildest moments were between 35-45.
i dont really know if it was a mid-life crisis or just making up for what i couldnt do when i was young?

My ability to drink alcohol used to be quite impressive . I could go on an all day binge , usually watching the albion away , and still be coherent when I got in . In the blink of an eye this changed but my head still thinks I can drink like that . This has lead to some tricky situations , can't remember coming home, waking up in funny places , falling over and only last week I pissed all over the front room floor after watching the albion then talking absolute Bollocks to the locals in local pub . It's almost like I'm 18 again . The funny thing is that during the week I live like a nun. I don't drink beer, don't eat red meat , go to the gym loads . This was another product of getting older that hit me in my late 30's , I really decided to look after myself a bit more . I just let myself down at the weekend .

The hair thing doesn't bother me as I shave it all off anyway . They grey pubes and chest hair are a bit more concerning so have to have a little trim now and again . Had to buy a nasal hair trimmer and if I leave my eyebrows alone I would be like Dennis healy in just over a month .

I was in the Air Force for 23 years and to be honest your post sounds exactly like forces life. I also went mad around the 35 year mark pulled more birds than when I was in my yoof. Unfortunately now with hair coming out of every orifice there is a sudden dearth on the female front. Now I get blown out more times than a birthday cake.
