Microsoft "Help" cold calling

I love receiving these calls. Usually start with trying to fit flux capacitor somewhere into the conversation. If they ever ask for my IP address so they can "connect" to my computer I just give them my local one. Or my personal favorite try and spin it onto them so you end up helping them with a problem. Or if they ring me again at 2 am like they have a few times i just throw abuse down the phone and hang up.

I have had several of these calls and I must admit I have grown quite tired of them now.

The most recent one who called me had a free moral lesson along the lines of " when you learned English surely you were learning to get on in the world and earn a decent living ? " " Surely you would have wanted to go to bed at night and sleep well knowing you had worked hard but earned a honest days pay ? " " So, how do you live with your conscience now that you are trying to rip people off ? is this what you struggled through English lessons to do ? "

The reply was " As I was saying earlier, I am calling from Microsoft...."

This. They never seem to give up do they? If anyone finds out how to stop them ringing (always international) then do post it here. Can't believe that BT can't do something about it as it's clearly such a big scam.

I read an amusing blog post not so long ago from someone who managed to trick a "Microsoft" scammer into uploading a package of virus files from a sacrificial virtual machine, by calling it something enticing like bank_details.zip. It's a satisfying way to get back at them, but if you're the sort of person who has archives of viruses and sacrificial VMs on hand, you don't need my help in dealing with scammers, and it's not something that's easy to set up if you're a regular user.

By the seaside in West Somerset
interesting though that the police seem to think that what they are doing is not criminal (or not sufficiently so to bother taking details)

All in all a truly enjoyable experience. I'd call them back and thank them if I wanted to waste a few more quid but for now I've just passed their number to the boys in blue who - I have to say - appeared to be remarkably uninterested in saving the ratepayers from fraudulent exploitation. Perhaps I should raise it with my prospective Commissioner before I cast my vote next month?

A complete waste of time I'm afraid. Basically untraceable and any that can be are based well outside the uk. Not likely to change anytime soon.
