They have to be some of our worst ever players.

All gems unearthed by Micky.

when you are in the bottom league then they are not that bad. also being in the bottom league means they probably are some of our worse players. just like when we were in the top flight we had some of our better players to ever play for the club.

No, he did HAVE to, because the previous mob had just finished 91st two years in a row. What self-respecting manager would keep the majority of that squad together? It was a no-brainer, Adams had to build from new, and he did that job magnificently. Ok, there are a few duds, but you try bringing in 30 players without signing a bad one. The "then Bobby happened" argument is poor too. He brought in a lot of quality by league 2 standards - Brooker, Cullip, Jones, Carpenter, Kuipers, Steele, Watson, Wicks, and later Morgan. Even players like Freeman for example were of a standard that was way beyond our wildest dreams a few months earlier.

It didn't happen overnight, hence the idiots got on his back in that first season at Withdean, but looking back, the way he turned us from an absolute mess into a cracking footballing outfit in less than 2 years is the work of a GENIUS, and all of our managers since are not fit to be in the same room as Sir Michael.

The end:)

Well said that man

Horton, with the squad he built, had us on route for the play-offs until he jumped ship.

I was never sure why Micky felt it was necessary to clear out virtually the entire lot but he did and as a result we had another mid table season.

You can't be serious. We did ok under Horton, but only about as well as we did under Adams in his first season. Make no mistake about it, if Horton had been able to, he would have instigated a similar cull. Please tell me you agree that our squad at that time was absolutely disgraceful. Micky saw that in the last games of the season, and had the balls and ambition to do something about it that summer. The squad he put together for our first season at Withdean was light years ahead of the previous season's in terms of talent. They were never going to be consistent after being thrown together, but once Adams added the finishing touches the next year (eg Bobby, Carpenter, Michel) we were unstoppable. To even think of saying that we could have stuck with some of the Gillingham wasters is, frankly, absurd!

The squad needed refreshing definitely, the point is at first Micky brought in some absolute dross of the same standard or worse than we already had. Jamie Campbell better than Kerry Mayo? Darren Carr better than Gary Hobson?

No manager since has had that luxury, therefore I rate Micky as good manager but not a LEG-END.

Undoubtedly a good manager for us. But he did have many things in his favour:

Back in Brighton. A buzz about the club meant that attracting players was much easier than it is now.
He had a bit of cash by div 4 standards

Other things to remember
After 3 or 4 games at the beginning, we turned SHITHOUSE until Zamora came along with about 15 to play. After 4 games, Garth was on here proclaiming that we wouldn't lose a league game all season. :D
And let's not forget, we only stumbled across BZ because Brentford (I think) turned down our 75k offer for Lorenzo Pinnamonte - who was very ordinary. And we paid £100k - alot of money for a 4th div side.

It took Adams two seasons to get us up, in front of sold out home crowds every other week and massive away support. He then WHORED himself out to any reasonable sized club in the top two divisions. I went off him in a big way when he moaned that Southampton wouldn't interview him.

However, he did a decent enough job in the end - got us up, laid the groundwork for Taylor, and was excellent value when we (NSC) sponsored our first game versus Cardiff (Zamora winner - happy days)
