Is that a fact? No wonder I always think he gives us nothing. He had no intention of giving a blatant penalty until sent to the monitor yesterday and even them it took him an age to spot a nailed on penalty
I can see why he needed to view it again, l wouldn't call it "blatant" though.

Yes l do believe that some referees are incompetant, but in no way would l call any of them biased.

I think on this point it comes down to semantics. The handball occurred after Undav took the shot, so the opportunity wasn't denied.

Er, what? The ball could have gone in the net - of course it was an opportunity (just like Murray vs Shef Wed).

On the second handball, Oliver was quick to indicate he felt the arms of the defender were by his side/in a natural position, he didn't say the ball didn't hit the arm. VAR would need to show that the arms were nowhere near the defender's sides or a clear movement toward the ball for it to be deemed a clear error.

His arms may have been further out than Oliver realised - regardless, they got it wrong.

The current law (as adapted following the introduction of VAR and thus not the law when Murray played v Sheff Wed) distinguishes between 'a goal' and 'a goal scoring opportunity'.

A goal scoring opportunity is essentially a chance to shoot. Undav wasn't stopped from shooting, thus 'goal scoring opportunity' wasn't denied.

Because he got the shot away, it then becomes about whether it denies a 'goal'.

Could you please quote from the rules where a goal scoring opportunity has to be a chance to shoot, and not a shot that's already been taken.

As above - I know what happened, so please show where it is not still an opportunity

Would you care to explain how else you would distinguish between 'denying a goal' and 'denying a goal scoring opportunity'?

Is that the route via Clapham Junction?
This was the takeaway at Lyon Part Dieu, we had a break in journey.

You don’t see food like that in the hut at Haywards Heath station.

If anyone thinks the second penalty shout is a pen then you really don’t know football , if that’s given we all might as well pack up and go home !
Dear Mr Oliver
Thank you for your input to this discussion but we were ideally looking for contributions from those with an understanding of the rules of football.
Best regards

Yes:
Denying a goal is when the ball is definitely going into the net. If the handball isn't made, the ball will 100% go in the net.
Denying a goal scoring opportunity is preventing the ball from having the opportunity to go in the net. It may go in, it may not - it is an opportunity.

So from a semantic point of view (which you brought up earlier) the letter of the law definition is met - yesterday's handball prevented a goal scoring opportunity.

And if you want to go with the intention/spirit of the law, rather than letter, it is also met - he deliberately dived with his arms outstretched in an attempt to stop a goal. And saying 'he's about to shoot, therefore it's a red' vs 'he's not about to shoot, he's just shot, therefore it's a yellow', would be very much against the spirit of the game.

Hands up as I am wrong. I got that stat from the Argus last Tuesday. Apologies for misleading.
Dick Damage used to read the Argus.

Eva Petulengro.

Excellent for predicting the future (with enthusiasm, if not accuracy) but not so good on reporting things that have already happened.

Sometimes called 'The News'.
