Doubtless there will be loads of well-informed people on here to set the record straight but was watching the European football this week and wondered what players/teams from France, Germany, Spain, etc call things like the 18-yard box? Is it the 16.4592 metre area? And do they take penalties from 10.9728 metres? And do defensive walls have to be 9.144 metres away?

And yes, I do have too much time on my hands.

I think a 10.97 meter being awarded would be a bit of a mouthful.

And you do not HAVE to spot the ball right on the middle of the penalty spot, anyway. I'd like to think that the perfectionists amongst the Bundesliga's spot kick takers, deliberately spot it 3cm back from the centre.

No Doubt Pascal Gross has the ball hovering over the outer edge of the spot, but not actually touching.

In Spain they just say the area, or penalty area (area de penalti) for the 18-yard box. Area de meta (goal area) for the six-yard box.

Yes. The continental refs refer to the shaving foam as 915 spray.

PS I know it should be rounded down to 9.14 but it isn't. Believe me, it would be if I was in charge of things!

As an aside, the phrase "on the continent" ages one, doesn't it?
Not as badly as 'in Europe'. Albeit that's mostly something to do with Wunschdenken
