Truly amazing second goal very similar to the maradona goal against England in 86
Both great goals but which is best?

Messi for me as he had to have closer control of the ball

right - although no World Cups to his name , another name to rank alongside the likes of Pele and Maradona? or too early for that judgement call

Maradona only had Terry Fenwick and Peter Reid to outpace, I would fancy Kerry Mayo against that pair.

Messi's second goal was amazing. However, Messi's first goal wasn't. It was good, but most Premier League (and even Chamionship) strikers would have made exactly the same run and put it away. Quite why Townsend was creaming himself over it, I have no idea.

Second goal was amazing though

It was the Champions Leage semi-final away against their most bitter rivals. Only a top, top player would have lost the midfielder tracking them, then had the pace to get in front of the world class defender, then got the right touch to a low, hard cross to deflect it towards goal. And Messi is a midfielder.

You have more faith in the standard of strikers than me.

Quite. And this is why you can't compare old footballers to modern ones. Messi is miles ahead as he is playing against far better players week in week out.

You could say something similar about Maradona in '86 :(

I am somewhere between these two. It was a decent run, but the hard work was done by Allefay. It certainly didn't deserve the ridiculous adulation Townsend gave it.

Watching it again Messi is not picked up by the defensive midfielder marking him once he advances past the penalty spot (I assume that is where the midfielders brief ends). He then darts in to the near post and the finish is straightforward. Neat goal but nothing to get particularly excited about.

The second, however, was absolutely sublime.

We weren't really talking about messi's first.
We were comparing the sublime second goal to the maradona one against England weren't we
