A very intelligent woman who will be a loss to the Tory Party right now but she is young and she has a young family, she is not the first person to put family before career, I can see her coming back to Westminster in a decade or so.

I stopped reading at intelligent...

She is an attention seeker and one who just wants to make money and doesn't care who she treads on.

The statement that she wants to spend more time with her family is a smokescreen for coming out of the public eye for a period and she'll return in a few year time when people have forgotten who she is.

I think you will find that she is also just one of a few right wing rats leaving a sinking ship!

Once her fella has dumped her or her business venture has failed or both. She lost any last amounts of respect with that pathetic entrance into the drugs debate on QT a few months back. Talk about a f***ing drama queen.

100% this.

Her performance at the Phone Hacking Enquiry was pretty inept. She allowed Piers Morgan to take the moral high ground after she made allegations that had no provable substance. When she refused to repeat them outside the protective barrier of parliamentary privilege, she lost all credibility & made herself look even more stupid than she already is. Add to that, her obstructiveness in the delivering of the final report & her almost defensive attitude of the Murdochs, she was unfit to serve on that Committee.

A typical example of an MP who was shoehorned into a seat because of the aura surrounding her rather than the ability to serve her constituents and Parliament.

The departure of this self seeking publicist from the Tory Party whcih will almost certainly mean the seat of Corby returning to Labour plus the big cracks now appearing in the Coalition is the very early beginning of the end for this government.

The Tories don't have many senior female politicians and I get the impression that she was being fast tracked but all concerned rapidly found she was finding it a challenge. Too many sound bites and not enough substance. At least she has moved on before she became a liability.

Don't think I would be too impressed if I were a consituent of hers.

A bit like Jacqui Smith then ? I can remember some of her stunning performances at the dispatch box.

I'd add tiresome to 'self seeking publicist' but other than this i'm with you.

She is already worth a hell of a lot of money, not sure how much making more is involved in this decision, I honestly think she wants to concentrate on her young family for a while, something many people have done in the past.

She was a Tory 'A' list candidate who was parachuted into that seat. She clearly underestimated the work required to be an MP, author, businesswoman, social media contributor extraordinaire, TV guest........oh and mother and now wife (she got elected in 2010 and married in 2011). I dont doubt her reasons and do understand as many many parents have these dilemas every day.

So how have the Tories faced this issue? By commencing the process of parachuting another A lister into the seat.

Please don't be so gullible.

Politicians of all colour state "I'm going to spend time with my family" after they've created such a monumental cock up that they need to disappear out of the public eye for a while...

Jeffery Archer, Peter Mandelson, Cecil Parkinson, Jonathon Aitken, John Profumo are but a few.

I'd recommend you read Matthew Parris' book the "Great Parliamentary Scandals"...puts it all into perspective.

Was wondering that. Ok, she didn't do a very good job on the Media select committee, but not a scandal to cause her to have to "disappear". Much more likely she wants to spend more time on her private internet business, and her family in NY, and not be bothered with being an MP - that salary would hardly be worth it for her, she's already loaded.

She was pretty awful on the Media Select Committee, her worst moment being when she accused Morgan of phone hacking whilst editor of the Mirror, then eventually having to make a grovelling apology to the slimeball.

Very much an attention seeker, she was always an accident waiting to happen from a PR point of view. I suspect the Tory suits won't be too upset to see the back of her.

Hardly enough to have to remove herself from the limelight. I would imagine she doesn't need the hassle, would like to make her familiy life easier. She is already very rich, as a bestselling author, and her husband is the manager of Metallica - £60k a year as an MP is hardly going to mean anything to her, and not having to commute across the Atlantic isn't easy (I've tried it, it's not easy). Far from wanting rid of her, I would imagine the higher-ups in the conserative party would like her and her public profile. Can't say I liked her though - she had the chance to stick it to Murdoch and didn't take it (or more likely, was told not to).
